This is just an informative post that I'm going to leave here as it took me some time searching other forums for a solution to the problem I had, which was not getting anything other than 2 channel from my HD6850 video card via HDMI except from DTS/Dolby Digital encoded sources like movies. Passthrough (DD/DTS material) worked perfectly, but games were still 2 channel. I wrongfully assumed that if I was getting surround through HDMI from movies, etc that I would get it from games the same way. That was my first mistake!
I was told that I could get surround (5.1/7.1) in games over HDMI and when I tried it, it did not work, so I went back to using the analog 5.1 outputs on my motherboard to my reciever.
Tonight, after reading some more about achieving this, I decided to take some time to see if I could get it to work, and I did!
The steps I used were scattered through a few different posts from a couple different forums, so I wanted to bring them all together for those who might be in the same predicament I was in.
The first step, of course, was hooking the HDMI cable up to my reciever and removing the 5.1 analog cables.
I then went to the sound control panel menu and tried to configure the output over HDMI to higher than 2 channel, but it was the only option available!
There were alot of forum posts saying "just change it to 5.1/7.1!", but if the option isn't there, it obviously can't be changed. (Another note folks, just because something works for you, it may not be the same for others...)
I finally found a post saying to disable (uninstall) all of the Realtek drivers (my board uses a Realtek audio chipset obviously) and the options for 5.1/7.1, etc would show up after reboot.
I uninstalled the Realtek drivers, rebooted, Windows 7 loaded some drivers automatically (digital audio), and then the options for 5.1/7.1 were there!
Now all of my audio is sent to my reciever in it's correct format (DD/DTS/Game Audio).
I hope this helps!
