Hey people. Finally! my town has broadband so im ditching this 56k aol crap and going with a company called pipex for 1mb ADSL, they provide a free ADSL modem but my mate tells me its only for the 1 computer. In other words i cant share the connection to all the pc's in the house through it.

What i want to do is to get some sort of thing to install in one of the pc's and have the other pc in the house connected to the first pc, sharing its connection. But i got absolutely no idea in hell what im doing or what i need to buy to accomplish this :(

I went on Ebuyer.co.uk and found a hoard of stuff, routers, ADSL modems, ADSL router with ethernet blah blah. What do i need? and if you can give any reccommendations as to what i need i would be very happy :D I only typically buy from ebuyer since im in the uk and theyve got a pretty good rep and havent failed me yet.

Buying the Gizmos is secondary to understanding your options.

First make sure that they give you an External Ethernet Modem (No USB or Internal).

Then read this:

Link to: AnandTech - FAQ. Basic Options for Internet Connection Sharing

Link to: AnandTech - FAQ. Hubs, routers, switches, DSL, LANs, WANs...?

Ignore the prices in the links above. The same or similar hardware can be found for 60%-90% less.

If you decide to buy a Wired Router buy the cheapest that you can find.

This might help with Wireless (prices are US).

Read Jack's links - all very useful. I'm also in the UK and on Pipex - for future proofing I would buy a Wireless ADSL Router which will usually allow you to connect 4 PC's to one ADSL service using Network cabling and give you the option of adding wireless clients at a later date. I currently use an SMC Router with built-in print server (a nice extra!). As for suppliers - I also use Ebuyer so no worries there.

Something like this would be fine for your needs

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions
