Here are ten medieval torture devices. Which one would you use on your enemy? Which one would you choose to have to endure, given an ultimatum?

Man, people in those times were ruthless!! Can you imagine being ripped apart from the inside out?

I think the Pear of Anguish and The Rack are the worst. Breast Ripper ranks pretty high on the gruesome list too.

There was another list I read few years back that had this contraption that you straddled (it was almost like a triangle I think) and they'd tie heavy weights to your feet so that it'd basically split you right up the middle.

http://www.torturemuseum.nl/

Doesn't show many of the devices on the site, but humanity is a sick bunch when it comes to torturing. They've got both the devices dabuddha and chubby mention too, as well as a lot of other things.

There's torture museums in many countries, so if you want to see the horrors man can come up with just see which one is closest and go have a peek there.

Getting hanged, drawn and quartered isnt so bad because once you are hanged you dont have to suffer through the rest of it.

Ling chi is pretty effed up tho.

not quite: "hanged" in this context really means "slowly strangled until you pass out... revive... repeat as long as it's entertaining for the crowd..." They keep you alive until the horses do their part.

The device Chubby mentioned:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_methods_of_torture#Judas_cradle

The one Dabuddha mentions is the sharpened version of the horse, also called the wooden horse or the Spanish donkey.

Man I had fun reading that article during downtime today. Rat torture? Lol. Scaphism was the one that I mentioned about being tied up on a lake covered in honey and left to rot amidst his own shit.

Anything being placed in an oven or cauldron of water/oil that slowly heated up. Kind of like the brazen bull. Just waiting through the heating-up process... I still place my vote for ling chi, though.

As someone else mentioned, usually the point wasn't to kill you on the offset. What's the fun in that? Sometimes if someone involved in the execution took mercy on you then maybe you would be hanged to the point of death, but usually (AFAIK) the point was to hang you right to the brink of death and then bring you back.

Pillory would probably be the least intolerable of those options. As far as which device to use on an enemy, I don't think I have any enemies whom I would wish any of those devices upon.

I agree, but I might stoop to using the pillory on my enemies. I wouldn't throw rocks or anything, but a little bit of public humiliation isn't always a bad thing.

Many if not most all of those "medieval" torture devices and methods are complete 19th century fiction.
