gettin bit worried at creeping temperatures

i have a athlon 64, and contrary to what i said in my thread about cool n quiet i have enabled cool n quiet again yet turn it off when i play games, just to be safe

anyway i have a A64 3200 newcastle core runing stock.

when ive used C n Q in the past ive always saw idle temps round 30 degrees and load temps no higher than 45, i am using a zalman cnps7000 cu with the thermal paste they supplied

jus before i did a fresh install of xp, i noticed my temps higher than norm

and now the temps seem to be creeping up every few days, im now idling at 36 ave and am currently at 39 degrees

2000 ish rpm on fan, and cpu is only doin 1000mhz

whats happening...thers not too much dust in there, case has a dust filter, which is cleand weekly, im at uni and we dont have a hoover in our hall.

is the thermal paste giving up?

The thermal paste could be giving up. If it's old and cheap, it could be dried out. I haven't had that problem with Arctic Silver 5; the stuff I cleaned off a Zalman VGA cooler I recently retired was about 14 months old and it was still goopy. Some other stuff I've used (generic white stuff) has dried up completely in that amount of time or less, although I didn't notice overheating when it did.

Try some new thermal paste, and if that helps your situation, get some AS-5 next time.

Also, make sure none of your HFS clips have broken or come loose. Check your PSU fan, too.
