[I saw this on JC's news. This looks very promising!!!]

You're right! ;) But we can still admire the prices right, or dream of a MOBO being released soon?!

Well, whattaya know. More than a month after the fact

I don't see any reference to PC2100 RAM at the link you gave - since PC2100 RAM is a brand new arrival to crucial's site, I think this is unsurprising. :)

This has been posted before, BUT............ I needed a reminder that DDR is still on its way for a cheap price.

rambus isn't toast, their how do you think they survived prior to this? their stuff was in the n64, now in ps2. they're making dough that way. and if micron's lawsuit doesn't work, they'll be making dough on sdram too. but i think it will work, cuz rambus broke a contract when it patented some sdram bits.

[their stuff was in the n64, now in ps2. they're making dough that way.]

That?s because DDR was not readily available then, plus, there are more personal computers in a home then there are PS2?s and N64?s, plus the N64 is on its way out! In my home it?s a 3 to 1 ratio (3 computers and 1 N64, there is no way in hell will I spend $1000+ on any console, I would rather build another computer/server, so a PS2 is out of the question) The market for DDR DIMMs will boom once available, and at those prices will kill RAMBUS, unless they bring down their prices, and I mean way down!

Yeah you don't see Nintendo putting that crud in their next console either. Nope, they went with 1T SRAM and some plain DRAM.

Just like before when people erroneously posted that Crucial DDR was available for sale, this is the same situation over again. I am constantly amazed at the number of people who can't/don't bother, to read. Namely this ...

<< Qualified hardware developers may order DDR SDRAM parts online by contacting Crucial's DDR sales team.
As DDR-compatible hardware becomes available, we will add DDR SDRAM
modules to our regular online purchasing process
>>

In other words, this is not available to the general public at this time.

BTW, check out Dell systems and you will find that they are basically charging the same for SDRAM or RDRAM. Andy G. probably made Samsung cook up a big batch for Michael D. at a special price ... :D :D :D

great, we have some anecdotal evidence from a hardware nut. i don't know about the current market, but console unit sales outsold pcs for a very long time, and probably still do. and rambus doesn't make much money on each $1, around $.02, so on that $300 RIMM they make $6. so its not rambus' royalty pricing that is holding up the price, its that the things are hard to make, sony is gobbling most of them, and dram manufacturers are resisting conversion; they would rather make that $.02 themselves. don't get me wrong, they're evil and should burn in hell, i just don't think they're going to fail anytime soon, just like microsoft isn't going to be squashed by any penguins, and intel isn't going to die because amd is putting up a fight for the first time in a decade. (they were pretty competitive back in the 386 and 486 days, for those of you who are newbies.)

That?s right ElFexin, but consoles won?t do it alone for Rambus. They still need to drop them prices on PC based memory to have a fighting chance, (which out sale console base memory components, because the last time I checked you couldn?t upgrade you N64's memory) which they seem acknowledge by the fact 128MB of Samsung PC-600 (RIMMs) can be had for $240 opposed to $800+ just a year ago.

And both Intel and Microsoft can afford (not by choice) to lose money to their competitors for the next ten years and still be around, maybe even 20.

Of course what is very interesting is that those DDR modules sell for LESS than we can buy PC133 from them.

Of course its for qualified people only, but it does not take much to qualify. Basically, a reseller.

its not rambus keeping the prices high its the memory manufacturers! prices were high last year because sony put out huge orders, intel made their puppets buy a bunch, etc. not because rambus said, "we want the price to be high." now that more production has come online the prices are falling. and you can upgrade the memory for the n64, at least it was designed that way. its not like rambus has to recoup manufacturing costs. how many people can possibly work at an IP company? i'm guessing rambus has under 100 employees. very low costs. they don't need much to keep afloat.

EDIT: the point of the console bit is to show that rambus has been around a while just on console royalties. would their costs have increased so much (maybe the lawyers to sue all the dram companies?!?) that they can't live off of console sales until their tech is actually needed?

Hardware Developer does not equal Reseller. It's already been tried ... :(

"how many people can possibly work at an IP company?"

ever heard of Ballard Fuel cells? it's most likely where Ford and DaimlerChrysler will get all their fuel cells. until about 1998, they were ONLY an IP company, but their costs for R&D were huge! in the hundreds of millions. they only had about a hundred people, but MAN, thats alot of money. they needed it all, becuase they were experimenting with many many different materials to find the best combination for efficient, yet low cost Fuel cells.

well recently, they've frozen IP somewhat so that they can begin manufacturing their fuel cell which will be going into 2003 cars.

Ballard was competing against companies the likes of GM, with millions of dollars (american None the less) of profit, but the way ballard worked, because they were such a small company, the were able to manouver MUCH better then GM or other fuel cell research teams, and have turned into the world leaders in fuel cell tech (which is why daimlerchrysler, and ford bought into them!).

oh, and did I mention that Ballard is a Canadian company? go figure..

Heh, actually the N64 is one of the very few consoles ever that does let you upgrade the memory NOX. It comes with 4MB and you can upgrade to 8MB...and this isn't an obscure thing either, it was actually a pack in with one of their biggest selling games last christmas.
