Get the little lock next to your AIM screenname

i made a little (well, not little) tutorial for those that want to get the little lock next to their screenname.
Shouldn't there be a little lock on this thread? It belongs in the software/apps category...

u make it like sound like ur giving out ur information to some random stranger. thawte.com is like any financial/government institute where to use their services, you need to create an account with personal data. security certificates are what allows websites to authenticate that they are THE REAL thing. if a fake www.staplessales.com site comes up and claims they're staples.com, u can easily verify that by checking their security certicate.

also with a security certificate, you get a public/private key for encryption purposes. it's basically your online ID.

if all u want is the little lock, then animencrypt.com is the easier way to go.
but ur chats are no longer safe since they can just run ur chats through that same certificate and decode it.

Screw that. go to www.aimencrypt.com and get a version that doesn't require you to sign your life away.

Hence inputting garbage data.
Isn't that illegal or something? 😉

Probably. Tough to track you down for it though - considering you give them garbage data across the board 😉

ip trace

erm...i was readin on your page...and wanted to correct u...
Thawte is NOT Verisign's competitor....coz Verisign owns Thawte.

Which is a total PITA to pull off if the target is mildly technically competant and used a public network.

Why are you giving away the lock secret to everyone??? I suggest you get rid of this tutorial before the eliteness of the lock is eroded even further.

I'm really confused, now why would a company need your information to allow people to use encryption for PRIVACY? Talk about irony... encrypted messaging should be freeware, no strings attached.

Too late. The leetness of the lock is gone forever. :|

How exactly does this protect you?

I mean, I realize your IMs are encrypted now.. but is there a way to capture or view IMs as they fly through the net? lol

Packet sniffer on your own network?

That's what I'm saying.

Who is going to be able to intercept your IM convos besides maybe your ISP?

The government...they are out to get yah.

although most of our chats have no reason to be encrypted since usually we have no problem having a total stranger read our conversations, but when data is propagated through the internet, it goes through many systems.

a tracert from my computer to anandtech.com shows:

1 <1 ms 1 ms <1 ms 192.168.2.1
2 14 ms 13 ms 13 ms 10.144.128.1
3 10 ms 12 ms 11 ms 12.244.97.97
4 10 ms 11 ms 11 ms 12.244.67.86
5 12 ms 14 ms 11 ms 12.244.72.198
6 16 ms 13 ms 11 ms gbr2-p50.sffca.ip.att.net [12.123.13.62]
7 14 ms 13 ms 47 ms tbr1-p012702.sffca.ip.att.net [12.122.11.69]
8 13 ms 13 ms 42 ms ggr2-p300.sffca.ip.att.net [12.123.13.190]
9 15 ms 14 ms 29 ms p16-0-1-3.r21.plalca01.us.bb.verio.net [129.250.9.73]
10 17 ms 16 ms 19 ms xe-0-2-0.r20.plalca01.us.bb.verio.net [129.250.4.230]
11 78 ms 102 ms 73 ms p16-0-1-3.r21.asbnva01.us.bb.verio.net [129.250.2.193]
12 72 ms 75 ms 73 ms p16-4-0-0.r02.asbnva01.us.bb.verio.net [129.250.2.63]
13 79 ms 76 ms 73 ms ge-1-1.a00.asbnva01.us.ra.verio.net [129.250.26.97]
14 74 ms 101 ms 78 ms ge49.r1.vadc1.eicomm.net [168.143.105.78]
15 78 ms 75 ms 73 ms 168.143.107.162

which means i went through 14 systems before reaching here. any packet sniffer located @ any router between you and the person ur chatting with will be able to record your conversation.
