If you want a better one right now then get D70.
If you prefer Canon, wait a while. They will announce some new DSLR at Photokina next month.

My digicam contacts tell me to wait until after the Olympics for an imminent price drop. :)

DPReview people are saying that the new Canon DSLR will be announced around January and be released next summer sometime.

I just bought a 300D Digital Rebel a week ago and I love it! Next to no Noise at 800 and 1600 ISO! Amazing.

Here's a few pics I took at the zoo today (only 1 week experience with it): My Thread at DPReview.

What's your price range? Canon might have new DSLR out later this year, but it's probably not in the same class or price range as the Digital Rebel (300D).

I've had the Canon Digital Rebel for 2-3 months already and I like it. :)

The D70 is indeed the better camera in terms of build quality and materials. That said, I still believe Canon's 6.0 megapixel CMOS sensor is better in high-ISO/low-light conditions. So I am personally going to wait for Canon to produce a better D70 competitor.

What I've heard is that Canon will introduce the 10D-Mark II this Fall and lower its price from $1499 to $1299. The 400D will replace the 300D at the same $899 price point and the 200D will be introduced with a CCD sensor (not CMOS) at the $499 price point sometime in 1H 2005.

Canon EOS-1Ds: $7999
Canon EOS-1D Mark II: $4499
Nikon D2H: $3199
Canon EOS-10D: $1499
Canon EOS-10D Mark II: $1299
Nikon D70: $1299
Canon EOS-400D: $899 (Featuring minor build and software upgrades.)
Canon EOS-300D: $899
Canon EOS-200D: $499 (CCD-based SLR, not CMOS)

(All prices MSRP.)

I just posted this link in another thread: D70 vs. DRebel

As someone else pointed out, Canon is expected to drop new DSLRs at Photokina, specifically the replacement to the aging 10D (the 10D Mk II or the 20D, depending on who you talk to). Having said that, the DRebel is not slated for replacment until early 2005.

If you're looking to buy used, 10D prices have plummeted. It's not even funny, it's raining 10Ds at places like FredMiranda.com and Photo.net. The average used price is approaching $1000, which was DRebel territory not long ago. (The 10D adds FEC and AI Servo as well as a solid magnesium body, among other things, to the DRebel.)

I agree with GTaudiophile, the Canon 6.3MP CMOS sensor is better than the CCD used in the Nikon -- at ISO 1600 and up. Do you shoot at ISO 1600? I know I don't. The fact of the matter is the D70 is here, NOW, and it is for the most part a better camera than the DRebel, especially where the kit lens is concerned. If you can afford the price premium, my money would be on the Nikon.

200D? what is this going to be? another SLR just with a diff sensor, how little features will it have to be only 500$?

Rumor has it that the 200D will simply be a 300D/400D with a cheaper CCD sensor.

The camera I am waiting for is the EOS-10D Mark II. Hopefully it will be a Christmas present to myself!

Hey, I just noticed something GTaudiophile: Your price list mixes cameras which include lenses, and those which don't. For instance, the 10D Mark II (20D?) will almost certainly NOT come with a lens, while the D70 at $1299 comes with the 18-70mm AF lens. As you probably know, glass isn't cheap so it's something to keep in mind!

[EDIT: Spelling.]

ok thats has to seem lika BAD ise to peopel other then me, why release teh same camera for 1/2 the price if the only diff is teh sensor, unless it has signifigantly less MPs or just sucks, noone will get the more expensive one,

I have a D70 and its great, im waiting for nikon to get of their asses and give us a D2X - gonna have to be at least 6-8mp and have most of the D2H features, but less FPS, be able to boost to ISO 6400 effectively

Don't get Nikon D-70.
Repeat: don't ever get D-70.

D-70 sounded so good when Nikon announced its specs, however the camera has too many serious flaws and they are not fix-able flaws. It's simple; D-70 is just like those cache-less celerons. Don't get fooled by its amazing specs.

Digital Rebel is better than D70 and don't forget to update the firmware, too(the one made by the Russian guy). That Russian guy's firmware unlocks those features that Canon hid (Canon didn't want Digital Rebel to have all those functions that their more expensive models have).

1. Under many situations, the left side of pic. is red and right side is green.
2. Pictures are slightly bent, meaning that left and right side isn't parallel.
3. Generates green, white horizontal bars when the shutter speed is high (POS eletronic shutter problem)
4. There are other problems as well, but I can't think of 'em, now.

This was a huge issue in my country and Nikon had to refund many and many customers.

yea there was a batch that came from teh factory that were bad, its all been taken care of now and it didnt happen to all the cameras, most peoples were fine, or were fixed by nikon

mine was fine from day 1, never showed any of the issues with back focus titled viewfinder for the color shift which only happens at shutter speets greater then 1/4000 at apatures less then 2.8

The problem is not about those 'some bad ones'. It has not been taken care of and it will never be.
It's because of the electoric shutter system D-70 uses. D-70's POS electoric shutter system kicks in when shutter speed goes over 1/125 and it's when that "Green horizontal bar' apears.

Well, you can avoid that "Green horizontal bar" issue by following some annoying tricks, but you can't avoid that "Left-red, Right-green" problem no matter what because it, out of no where, pops up.

That's strange. I have read quite a bit at the dpreview, fredmiranda and nikonians sites yet don't recall any mention of the problems you mention outside of the early production run problems that were corrected.

Also a Google search for ("Green horizontal bar" Nikon) returned no results.

Hmmmmmmm:confused:

the electronic shutter kicks in above 1//250 IIRC and like ZOXXO i have never heard of this color shift or green bar as you call it

I forced my camera to do it once by shooting at 1/8000 f/1.8 and there was a bluc shift, but seeing as there no reason to ever shoot like that im not worried, i had to point the cam at the sky on a bright day to even get that to meter right

I'm about to buy....but I still have doubts.

Is there a smaller camera out there that takes great pictures at any lighting and no messing with settings?I don't want to have to mess with camera settings for a couple of minutes just to take pictures. The price is also something that's holding me back.

do you need just a general carry around camera, or what are you taking pictures of? how important is speed?

what camera do you current have? film slr? or just a point and shoot camera? or older digital?

If you don't want to mess with the settings then it sounds like a dslr wouldn't be right for you. (that's half the fun!)

what's your budget?

the new Canon G6 looks pretty good so far...from reading about it...I haven't seen one yet.
