Get rid of #6 at end of name in device manager

Ok... this is more of an annoyance than anything else.

I just finished installing a wireless cardbus adapter on my laptop. Because of install difficulties, the adapter was uninstalled and reinstalled several times. Now that the device is working, the name in the hardware manager looks something like "Adapter Name #6"

I know this is from multiple installs. Where can I go to get rid of the first 5 instances so that I just have "Adapter Name" ??

Any help is appreciated.

I don't think you can rename it without causing a problem with the device.

If it is working the way you want and you had problems installing it
originally, you may just want to leave well enough alone.

Did you delete the other 5 references after you had it properlly installed?

Do a search for that string in the registry. It's probably in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet sections (there's more than one CurrentControlSet). You should see if it shows up under "Friendly Name" in these sections and change its value there. Or, try changing the value wherever you find that exact string (the whole name with the #6 afterwards, exactly as it's spelled in Device Manager).

To be safe, you can export each key you make as a backup before changing the value(s).

I don't think it actually reall makes anything after each new try. Just right click it in network connections and rename it.

You'll probably be able to see the other 5 if you go into View and check "show hidden devices" (In Device Manager)

<- Not responsible for anything you do while that view is enabled ;)

Or if you log in under Safe Mode and check Device Manager. That's when older devices will show, in my experience.

I think this is MS way of counting hardware changes and I have not seen a way to change it. Ive got 3 network devices shown for each of the ones Ive tried in this box. Prolly will stay that way till I reinstall.

Thank you all for your help. It isn't my laptop, and it was just an asthetics thing for me. I'm going to leave it alone since it is functioning properly. Better not to mess with it I guess.

Oh yeah... and never ASSUME that someone you are helping out would do something like keep their computer updated. I dropped the ball there... :)

And even better, ALWAYS assume that once you help someone out with their pc, it becomes your problem forever.
"it wasn't doing this until you did that", etc.
