I am not sure, it has to do with buddaism. you can burn the incense.
 
The characters are somewhat relevant to solving the puzzle, but you don't have to know what they mean... It's a fun puzzle, IMHO, a lot easier than the first one.
 
question: whenever i choose an item and click "about item" i get small white rectangles at the bottom of the screen. is there supposed to be text there?
 
i believe so iamme, but since it is flash, i don't think you need to install any extra fonts, so i don't know what the problem is, but i could be wrong as well..

hmm....so there are little english hints at the bottom? right now it's just white rectangles, as if there's a font missing.
 
it's japanese
and there is an english version of the game, if you click home, and then check out the links on the right
 
I'm stuck, so here's my inventory:

hair on paper

picture of female

Anyone got more stuff? Also, the tone of the bowl changes if you put the beer or cd case on the shelf...
