Get music off iPod...

So I hear that if you try to get music off your iPod... iTunes just formats your iPod. True? Anyway... What software do I use to get music off the iPod? It's for windows.

Friend is going to format their computer... Friend rather just copy music off ipod and back onto computer rather than backup her whole library...(Because that would take a few CDs or DVDs, whatever) So... What does she use on her Windows computer?
