Get me ready to give my boss a 2-week notice

After accepting a new job, I must now give my current employer a 2 week notice. I currently work for a small company as an accountant. The company has been having financial problems and it doesnt consist of many people. I have a lot of responsibility at my current company, enough responsibility that if I were to leave, it would cause much distress to the owner, and most likely a chaotic environment in the office trying to pick up the pieces I leave behind. Basically, if I were to leave, my boss might have a breakdown. He is a great guy, but being an accountant (one of 2) who handles most of the money that goes through the company, I can smell bankruptcy in the near future. And I hate the other woman I work with (the other accountant.) With that said, I plan on giving my boss the 2 week notice on Friday, so he has a weekend to recover before have to see him again. What is the easiest, less awkward, yet professional way to do this?

it's not your fault the place is chaos. just give your 2 weeks notice and move on.

you could always offer to come back as a consulant on the side for much more money.

Some people actually like their bosses, and the relationship is more than just employer/employee (think grown-up here guys). I'm in the same situation myself, where I work for a small shop that consists of the two owners (husband and wife) and only 4 other employees at the moment. My bosses are simply the coolest people you could ever work for, and unlike the OP, business is pretty decent where I am. However, it's not a job to stick with for the rest of your life. I've been there for almost 3 years now, am looked upon as basically the go-to guy there now, and my time is coming soon for when I'll leave. It will be really tough to give the 2 weeks, I dread it actually.....

Yea, I know the feeling exactly. I am dreading this Friday when I have to break it to him.

Buy him a fruit basket. Place a note at the bottom. After he eats the fruit, he will get a surprise.
Hopefully he'll finish the fruit shortly after you leave in 2 weeks, then he'll understand why you didn't show up 😛.

Just do it. Not much else you can do. Just be nice about it. Give him some bs about this being a new oportunity for you, with lots of chances for advancement, etc etc. Tell him how great he's been to work for, stuff like that.

It does hurt when a valued employee leaves, its hard sometimes for the boss not to take it personally. Just keep that in mind and you'll be fine.

Whatever you do, do not let him sucker you into staying, even if he offers you more money and junk. Stick to your guns, keep it short and sweet. Oh, and don't slack off during your final 2 weeks.

*ding* The winner!

Additionally: Being that it's a small company, and you're like family, etc, don't let him GUILT you into staying, either!

Your accountant-sense is driving this; you smell the money drying up real quick-like; drop your papers (in writing) and bail. Good luck.
