after weeks of messing about, the new machine is on my desk!

we have been introduced to the amazing world of Windows XP pro

pleasantly suprised to find a 1.86Ghz Core 2 Duo and a gig of ram under the hood though! i was expecting a Pentium D. its also packing a Lightscribe drive too!

its stickered up with Intel vPro stickers....whatever Vpro is, and its wrapped up in HP's finest generic black box with tacky silver bezel.

shame about the onboard GMA950 integrated crapics.... this would of been a tasty machine with a decent PCI-E GPU.

yay for me

HP DC7700? Set up a user's machine almost identical to that on Friday, except it was a 2.13 GHz core 2 duo and 2 gb ram

You know, you can still install programs locally if you really wanted to.

is there anyway i can get divx or xvid working without having to install? the divx bundle does actually install, but then i cant launch the player. community codec pack will not even start.

i think i might just ring the dude up an have him log in as admin and just install it for me.

vPro? That means is has the Q965 chipset, with X3000 graphics - completely Vista Premium ready, for office graphics - that will do great.

I work at a worldwide computer hardware distributor and I still have an Intel Celly 2.4GHz. :|

Bastage! :p

it appears you are right Q965/963 chipset family is what the computer lists. nice! i'd imagine they'll go for vista in about 5 years, by which time ill be long gone. this thing is proper slick!

Congrats. I still have people in some departments that are using the original Compaq iPaqs. No matter what I tell them they are to cheap to order something new.

Try using a portable version of vlc instead. It'll play all your divx files just fine.

All you need is a usb memory stick, and it should work fine. You can get portable vlc and other apps at portableapps.com

In a similar story, I went to my "outside" desk at work and see that IT came and reclaimed my old 2.4GHz PC and 22" CRT. :(

Now I'm stuck on a community PC with a crappy 19" LCD.

Ya, I managed to talk my boss in letting me purchase mine and my partners machine. Ended up getting a Dell Optiplex 745, comes with:

1.86ghz Core 2 Duo
1gb ram
Radeon X1300 Pro
dual flat panels

Not too bad of a machine for our only helpdesk dept. :)
