Get current SB version MB, or wait 'til Fall?

For major upgrade (new MB, CPU, memory) of gaming computer in the house... son and I play primarily FPS style games. Anticipate possibly getting second 5870 card next year to run CrossFire.

Go with an Asus P8P67 with i5-2500 or i7-2600k now, or wait 'til fall for Sandy Bridge-E? This computer used only for gaming. Current rig's specs shown below.

Thanks for thoughts.

If you're intent on getting Intel, you could get that combo now; DDR3's pretty cheap these days. You could then sell your existing setup on the FS forums to make up some of the difference.

On the other hand, if you're willing to go AMD, Bulldozer's on the horizon, so it may be a good idea to wait a couple of months; maybe try overclocking the 8400 a bit.

In any event, you're in a good spot since a lot of your existing components (SSD, 5870, PS) will transfer to the new system.

SB-E is an enthusiast level processor that would just be wasted if it was meant to just play games. As of now there are not that many games that can take advantage of more than 4 cores and the SB-E is aimed at 4 or more cores. As a high end for Intel I doubt that it will even come cheap at all.

If you could wait like 2 months more there would be Bulldozer coming out or if you are not into AMD you could just grab a SB setup and still be able to use it for gaming. There is also Ivy Bridge that would be coming out somewhere early next year. If you can't wait then just grab a Core i5 2500K and a P67 motherboard now.

A new cpu/MB coming out in Fall/Winter will prob be more money than the 2500 or 2600k cpu that I can OC to @ 4.5ghz. MB/CPU/Memory should be about @ $850... Plus case & cooler if I need to switch. My other components will transfer to new rig... have good SSD and PS. Game we play is BBC2, which is quite cpu-intensive. My E8400 is the bottleneck, as my Vid card (AMD 5870) is VG. When I had the E8400 CPU OC'd to @ 3.6ghz, it was a bit funky, so I went back to stock speed of 3.0. We get about 45-52 FPS in BBC2 game, running at 1920x1200 native resolution of the monitor.

SB-E or Ivy Bridge I think will cost more than what I can accomplish w/ SB now with OC'd i5-2500 or i7-2600k... yes?

Think I've had the P775 chipset w/ Core 2 Duo E8400 for @ 4 yrs or so...I'm due for a new toy... rationalizing here....good at that...

I would suggest that you wait till Bulldozer comes out. When it comes out then you could have a choice of getting AMD or Intel because as of now AMD's processors are not very competitive towards Intel processors. Even if you do not intend to get an AMD processor you could still benefit as the price of SB will definitely drop when Bulldozer comes out in 2 months time. 🙄

I usually base my upgrades around having the funding now vs later down the road. If money will always be there and your current setup is running what you need it to at the settings you like I would wait till fall. However if you have funds now but might not have the extra come fall I say order now.
