I damaged the latch on the battery compartment of my camera (SD550). I sent it off to Canon for repair, and called Visa for the extended warranty paperwork (1.5 years old). Not sure how much/if any Visa will reimburse yet. Today I got a quote for $135 to fix, or $175 for a refurb. The $40 isn't a big deal, just having a camera in better shape/working condition is more important..what would you do?

good question, I just called them and they told me the repair work comes with no warranty, but the refurb comes with a 6 month warranty. The refurbs are from one of the three things: store overstock, ones that they have pulled from the lines to test their process control, or floor display models (ick). She said that they are all tested to make sure that they work, and none have scratches or dents of any type (mine had a few)

I've bought plenty of refurbished products and have not had and problems with any of them. My current Netgear router was refurbished and it works great. It has 108Mbps wireless and cost me $15 shipped.

Cant you just use I piece of tape to close it?
Or hit ebay and buy a busted camera like yours and swap the parts out?

If your too good to do the tape thing, I will buy your broken camera off you for $25+shipping :)

hahaha :p

the problem is that the battery door doesn't OPEN without the latch, not that it wont stay closed. i actually have the latch still. Looks like Visa will reimburse me for the amount of the repair. leaning towards picking up the refurbished one though because of the warranty..i just hope i don't get a used up floor model
