Get auto repair covered under warranty after expired?

I know sometimes car (or any) manufacturers will still cover repairs after the warranty period has expired. I've worked at a couple dealerships and have done this. My Nissan truck is almost a year out of warranty, but the paint has a defect all over. It's probably been this way for awhile but I didn't notice it until a few months ago (I know I should have gone then). It's been suggested to me from someone to try to get testimonials from other people that have gotten things covered out of warranty by Nissan, so I can send these to them when trying to get mine covered. It's a long shot at this point, but I'm going to try. So if you have a Nissan and have done this, please let me know. A scan of your RO (repair order/receipt) would be a bonus.

Even if you don't have a Nissan, I'd like to hear if you've done this.

00 Maxima has a 3/36 warranty and at around 4-5 years and 59k miles I managed to get them to a set of ignition coils (normally covered only under the 3/36). Repair is $650 through nissan, or $310 for the coils and do it yourself. I did the latter. I sent them a letter complaining about this well known and well documented issue (BTW bad paint on nissans is also a well documented issue - at least over at forums.maxima.org at least on maxs and probably on other nissans), and they actually sent me a check.

I don't have the receipt or anything, but I posted here a while back the letter I sent them. I spoke about how much I like nissans and my next car will be one, and that this is such a common problem I hate to have to pay for it and a full or partial credit would be really nice, etc. Remember that when somebody doesn't have to give you anything, they only will if they feel appreciated and you're nice about it :)

I would bet that you are on your own. Not to be mean, but if you were worried about problems after the base warranty, you should have purchased an extended warranty. If the paint problem was around a year ago, you should have brought it to their attention then. You're probably wasting your time; they have no reason to fix your problem.

He probably won't get anything to cover it - especially since paint repairs are pricey - but it can't hurt and doesn't cost more than a stamp. The reason Nissan may do it is because they know that brand loyalty gets cars sold.

And I AM a loyal customer, as of now. I own two Nissan's. My last GF bought a 20th AE Max probably because when looking for a new car, I steered her towards the Max.

dirtboy, I didn't know about the paint problem until this year. You have to get down close and look to see it the problem well, but then it's very noticable. Therefore I didn't 'take the time' to notice it until a couple months or so ago. Now that I know, I can really see it. And having been a service advisor, I can say extended warranties can be a joke. And usually none cover paint.
From http://www.carbuyingtips.com/warranty.htm
Typical Exclusions In Extended Warranties
No auto extended warranty covers glass, lenses, sealed beams, light bulbs, trim, moldings, bright metal, upholstery, paint, exhaust systems, tires, air bags, batteries, brake rotors, drums, shock absorbers, throttle bodies, etc. These standard exclusions are in nearly all auto extended warranties, so don't let it bother you, it's it's just standard maintenance items. You can see why tires and bulbs are not covered in car warranties, same with exhaust systems rot, paint is covered by the regular warranty.

it isn't with any particular maker...if you out the warranty period - it's an uphill battle to get things done. that's why they have extended warranties.

Wrong. Auto manufacturers don't offer extended warranties.

Nissan does in fact offer extended warranties under Security+Plus which is a part of Nissan just like NMAC. Does it cover paint? It depends. What year is your truck/model/ miles?

Is it just a paint defect?
Is there any corrosion? Which warranty are you talking about 3/36 B2B or 60/unlimited corrosion (perforation)?

It's a 2000 Frontier with 31,000 miles. I think the warranty expired July 2003. You can see pics of the paint here. They're not great, but it's hard to take a pic of. The problem is the white specs everywhere. I believe that's the white primer or metal underneath. Those do go 'in'. Tell me more about the corrosion warranty.

No, No, this is the internet age. If you whine about it enough, you will find a billion people to commiserate with you and convince you that you are entitled to whatever you want!

Wrong. Toyota and GM were one of the first manufactueres to offer extended warranties. I am sure by now many have followed.

Back to your question at hand, Being an ex-service advisor as you claim you should already know the answer to your question. After the first year of in service date you are looking at a very uphill battle that you will have to involve the district factory to rep. Of course first step is to get an open RO at your local dealer and listen to the SM and GM tell you they cant cover it. Unless there was a service buletin or recall issued your chances are very slim of getting it covered. Good luck all the same.

The corrosion warranty won't help in your situation. Usless you washed your car with acid or a shot blaster I think you have a case. I can't find any service bulletins or recall info regarding the paint nor can I find anybody with similar problems which will make it harder on you. Is this all over the truck? Take it in and see what they say and go from there.9
