A couple months ago my Grandfather developed some type of hip injury and had to use a walker to get around very slowly/painfully. He pretty much had to stay at home in bed all day because it was too painful to go out and move around too much.

After some tests and scans the doc told him he had some type of calcium buildup in his hip that was causing the pain and there was nothing he could do about it. so he prescribed some heavy painkillers. Anyways, the doctor dismissed the notion of any physio therapy or any other alternatives and pretty much told him he'd had to get used to it.

Flash forward to today and he comes over for dinner, able to park his car across the street and walk over without a walker or even a cane. Suprised, I ask him where his cane is and he says he has no pain in his leg whatsoever and has been off pain meds for almost three weeks now.

The answer? Acupuncture! Apparently his sister had done it and got him to try it, and after a little needle work in the leg he was feeling much better! He was so impressed he even went back and got them to work on his back.

Moral of the story: Don't give up, have an open mind, and don't assume your doctor is the be all end all.

I'm actually quite interested in learning more about acupuncture now, anyone have any experiences?

My Grandpa 'was't feeling right' for a while.. couldn't sleep well. Doctor gave him a 'snore test' and gave him something to stop snoring even though my grandpa told him that he doesn't snore. 1 week later he was dead.

Never tried it and never plan to unless I too was stuck with chronic pain. Otherwise I don't ever want to pay someone to stab me over and over.

The same goes the other way. Don't completely ignore western medicine because your brother's father's cousin's roommate from college swears by colonics.

doctors are human just like us. Just like a football player who's in the NFL doesn't mean he's a superstar @ football.

Western medicine is great if you have a problem that needs drugs or surgery. Of course, since that is all most western doctors are taught, every problem requires drugs or surgery in their opinion. In terms of nutrition, western medicine is an abysmal failure.

lol. so true.

western medicine does some things great, as does eastern medicine. The best doctors, anywhere you go, are the ones that still read, and keep up with their particular field. Sadly, this has become more an more rare these days.

there are some hospitals in the US that actually offer acupuncture, as there exist a few western-trained doctors that will certainly recommend it for certain things.

It's when you go to a new doctor that your buddy recommended, and he/she starts talking about "vibrations" that you know you need to GTFO--and do whatever possible to report that charlatan and have their license to practice revoked. ;)

My biggest problem with acupuncture is that it works just as well whether or not the acupuncturist has any training in the subject or not.

What was the root cause?

And yes, always get a 2nd opinion, in this case, get a 3rd opinion.

It was a coincidence that his hip problem went away unless you can explain how acupuncture could cure that, or anything.

If you're in pain, and the doctor says there's nothing that can be done and just gives you a prescription, you would be a moron to not get a second opinion.
