Get a new PC now or wait for 800MHz FSB?

How much time does one need to wait for 800MHz FSB? I'm sure it'll be worth the wait...however, I don't want to hold off an upgrade if 800MHz FSB won't be out for another year or so.

I think motherboards (865 and 875) in April, CPUs (Prescott core) in May/June...

Personally, I'd wait for the motherboards, then build a system with a cheap P4 and upgrade when the 800MHz FSB CPUs come out.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be much less than a year, but I can't give you an exact date, maybe someone else can handle that though. I'm waiting for it though!

EDIT: There will be Northwoods that support the 800MHz FSB before the Prescott is released. IIRC the prescott is still a ways off.

Only one issue. Has anyone seen CAS2/CL2 PC3200 DDR anywhere? Or better yet PC3500/3700 for a little FSB overclocking headroom. I'd hate to have a fast FSB and slow CAS timings cancel each other out, and have yet to see better than CAS2.5/CL2.5 above PC3000.

Corsair (PC3200 2-2-2-6-1T, PC3500 2-3-3-7-1T)

Geil (PC3200 2-3-3-6-1T, PC3500 2-3-3-6-1T, PC3700 2.5-3-3-7-2T)

OCZ (PC3200 2-2-2, PC3500 CL2, PC3700 CL2.5) (they don't list all timings...)

Anyways, I want PC4000 with at least 2-3-3-6-1T timings. It should be out in time for the new mobos...

I think 800mhz fsb will make a pretty big difference frankly if you run a lot of high-memory and CPU-bound applications. Commanche 4 for example should run very noticeably faster.

basically I want a new machine that will eat up 3DMark2K3 (see my other thread) :|

I think new PC + new video card will do just nicely :D

Thanks Spice! Looks like PC3200 is up to 2-2-2-6 somewhere. Hopefully by the rollout of 800Mhz FSB DualDDR chipsets, PC3700 2-2-2-6 will be around to give me a little room to OC, too. Was hoping to find some ASAP, though, since my current system needs a memory upgrade and I figured I'd buy 1G of "the good stuff" now to use until I build a Prescott system later this year.

if you can afford that new technology right when it comes out... then go for it. I always calculate in the time it takes for something to come out PLUS the time it takes for me to actually be able to afford it , and then see if I can wait that long. :(

I would wait it out and get a 800mhz fsb motherboard at the very least. 800Mhz Northwoods should launch pretty near the 865 and 875, but prescott cpus are a ways off. A note to anyone looking to overclock, Dual DDR400 is about as good as memory is going to get anytime soon, so I'd imagine anyone doing any serious overclocking would have to forego synchonous Memory FSB timings. 5:4 (DDR425) or 4:3 (DDR400) ratios will be necessary to move up towards a 1066FSB.

I have waited for new technology only to found out when its released, that it really is hype and just fizzles.

DDR is not really double, my old SDRam on a Iwill board is faster than most DDR2100 is. Hyperthreading is not all that Hyper. Dual Memory Channels don't double your memory speed. And Serial ATA looks to be another dissappointment. The extra cache on the Bartons don't seem to improve the speed much.

I don't know if the DDRII will give any noticable speed improvements, but I wonder if its another product hype.

If I need to buy a computer, I wont wait for new technology. If I don't need to buy one, I put it off as long as I can, so I usually leap frog on new technology.

I can understand what you're saying. Sometimes it seems that the more you wait for a piece of new hw to come out, the more of a disappointment it becomes.

It depends on how bad you need (or want ;)) the new PC. You wont see THAT big of an speed increase, best case scenario around 10-15% at the same clockrate. There are alot of other bottlenecks in a system besides the fsb.

Other than that, once the 800fsb chips are released, the prices on the other chips should go down a bit, you might save $100 or so depending on which parts.
