Republican Guard commander cut deal with US forces

The mystery of what happened to the Iraqi Republican Guard defending Baghdad appears to have been solved if a report in today's Le Monde is to be believed.

The French daily reports that Maher Sufyan, Commander of the Republican Guard reached an agreement with American forces in which he ordered his forces to surrender in exchange for his transfer via an American Apache helicopter to an undisclosed safe haven.

Quoting anonymous sources, Le Monde?s correspondent in Baghdad said that Sufyan ordered all Republican Guard forces to lay down their arms and go home. Shortly thereafter an Apache helicopter escorted Sufyan from the Al Rashid camp, east of Baghdad, to an unknown location.

Maher Sufyan is not included on the infamous ?deck of cards? created by US defence officials to highlight the most wanted individuals from the Saddam Hussein government. Iraq?s popular Information Minister, Mohammed Saeed Al Sahaf, Naji Sabri, Iraq?s Foreign Minister and Medhat Oumid, the minister of health are also not included on the list.

Anyone know if there is any truth to this?

Wow.. Bush and Rumsfeld look more brilliant by the day... All the anti-war folk keep telling us how dumb they are, yet they managed to get nearly an entire Army to just drop their sh|t and go home.

I'd rethink that a bit. If the economy tanks then we'll have to take up a collection at each and every church to fund the continued operations.... I assume we'll be about to Lybia by then.

I think I'll vote for Bush for another term too.

What will the choice be anyway? Lieberman or Sharpton? I'd rather cut off my testicles with a rusty spoon.

What is it with people assuming the US will be invading every other country in the ME from now on? Is it the new bandwagon?

I guess all the people formerly on the "All Iraqi people don't want the US to get involved" bandwagon need somewhere new to flock to.

Does the anti-war crowd even realize they are making Bush look smart??????? If ever there was a good reason to stop the protesting from their viewpoint it should be that, besides the cheering Iraqi's, lol.

It was Bush and Rumsfield who did that? I could have sworn it was the thousands of bombing missions a day against people with no air defense, superior numbers, vastly superior weaponry, superior skill of the US army, and the fact that they were fighting for someone they didn't really care about...

But maybe Bush's speeches from the White House were equally as important. That "axis of evil" stuff" speech must have caused at least 3 soldiers to give up. I don't think Rumsfield is dumb. He got to his position through his achievements.

Um, let me explain how this all works. You see, Bush is the president of the U.S. and since he is the president he is the commander in chief of the military. Every military member including General's must salute Bush not the other way around. You just said that the reason they surrendred was because of ..... we'll let me just quote you.

I could have sworn it was the thousands of bombing missions a day against people with no air defense, superior numbers, vastly superior weaponry, superior skill of the US army

So since the power of the U.S. military was the reason they surrendered, and Bush is the top man of the military, you must give him full credit for what happened. see how easy that is.;)

It's about as intelligent than people who say "I'm dem/rep so I that's who I always vote for". Vote on the merits, not the party on your voter ID card.

I sincerely hope you either cannot vote or are kidding. I don't even want to think about how much money I have lost, and don't tell me it isn't the current president's doing, that is BS, people that say it takes 4 years for policy to affect the market are on drugs, just look at the fed for example, they drop interest rates, stocks go up. You could not pay me to vote for Bush and his henchman again, and I was FOR the war. I am just against idiots.

The only problem with George is the fact that he has a southern accent and is from Texas, not to mention he was missing during Vietnam ( I really could careless if he was a draft dogger). The big problem is his dad was from Texas, we all the people saying the only reason he got into Yale/Havard was because of his dad or the only reason he is going to war was because he dad couldn't finish the job. Rumsfled is pretty damned arragant and cocky. Atleast he isnt a damn pussy, but he can get cocky way too much at times, however with all the damn stupid reporters I would too.

I find that hard to believe. The Apache has 2 seating positions, the pilot, and the gunner/co-pilot.

Since the American pilot is flying the helicopter, do you really think they're going to let an enemy have control of the weapons and controls?

His dad finished the job...

When they began the war the objective was to remove them from Kuwait and that is it.

People dont understand that and they jump the gun...

No directed at you though Tabb...
