She's correct... to my knowledge, there's only one mention of hell being a place of fire, and that's a single passage in Revelations. Every other passage mentions "wailing and gnashing of teeth", something to that effect. Most of what I've read in Scripture points to Hell being "an absence of God", an existential, spiritual condition, not a physical one.

I don't agree with his arguments regarding suffering, either. While God let others use their free will to harm others in unimaginable ways, that doesn't mean that it doesn't cause Him pain when that was done.

My question is this: Why is hell concieved as such an evil and horrible place? This doesn't make any logical sense. Wouldn't Satan make it as attractive as possible in order to try to attract people away from God?

The analogy doesn't work. The people in East Berlin were already there when the Soviets took over. You are not already in Hell (or Heaven) at this moment.

i thought that was Albuquerque?

yeah it is a dry heat...but 115? even with 30% humidity is terrible.

(i used to live in MN so i know about the humidity and heat...blah)
