The box I am connecting to is a RH9 box. The viewer is installed on a WinXP box. Thoughts?

You may need to add a window manager to your ~/.vnc/xstartup.
$ echo fluxbox \& >>~/.vnc/xstartup![]()

that's nota blank window, it's twm. If you want to use KDE, add a "kdestart" command to ~/.vnc/xstartup. I have no idea what window manager you WANT to be using, though.

neither do I. I don't understand Linux at all, that's why i'm trying to install this so I can learn.

Well, I can't very well tell you what window manager you want to start instead of twm. Probably gnome or KDE, since they're the two most popular ones.
The question you're asking is kind of like saying, "Help, I turned my computer on and there are no programs open!" I gave the answer, "well then open one." You're saying "I don't know which one to open". I don't know which one you want to open either. KDE, Gnome, fluxbox that xcript suggested? Or you could use the default TWN if you want a super-basic window manager (right click and you get a menu).
