Germany to ban violent video games

It's times like these when I'm happy I live in the U.S. We might be stuck-up prigs regarding sexuality, but no one will ever take from us our gory slasher films and violent video games!

I don't think the ban extends to owning those games, so presumably someone could import them. Not exactly convenient or cheap though...

In case anyone's curious: games currently banned in Germany.

Brazil - Everquest: Banned because of high impact addicting violence. China is funny too, banning games because of recognizing Tibet as independent country.

Also it seems Aussies get the shaft hard when it comes to games...

Brazil - Everquest: Banned because of high impact addicting violence. China is funny too, banning games because of recognizing Tibet as independent country.

Also it seems Aussies get the shaft hard when it comes to games...

This isn't surprising. They've been doing this type of stuff for years. I remember a special version of Castlevania: Bloodlines for the Genesis had to be created specifically for Germany to remove the blood. They renamed it Castlevania: Generations, I guess because having "blood" in the title was offensive.

I hear it's gotten worse under Rudd. The level of censorship in Australia is appalling and shameful for a free, democratic society.

I like Saudi Arabia banning Pokemon for promoting Zionism. WTF?

Germany still has trouble coming to terms with its involvement in WW2 and the holocaust. The bans are just a bandaid because they frankly don't know how to deal with that problem.

Oddly enough, neither RTCW (Heinrich Himmler) nor Company of Heroes (Nazi Stormtroopers) are on that banned list. I think the presence of Swastikas is a no-no in Germany, which was what lead to Wolfenstein 3D being banned.

I seem to recall that a special version of RTCW (without swastikas) was made for Germany.

Yes Germany bans Nazi material in games. One of the reasons why Paradox's hearts of iron game has the german national flag and not the nazi flag. Battlefront makes combat mission games and the German version does not have the Nazi flag on SS units.
