Are Europeans content with the idea that Turkey may become a EU member soon? That country has been waiting for EU admission for so long that Turks probably don't even care about entering the EU anymore.
I don't really think that it's a good time for that. Europe is suffering from the refugee crisis (which was partly organized by Merkel) and accepting a Muslims country which is also full with Syrian and Iraq refugees would only worsen the current situation.

So Germany is happy to have members of the EU directly supplying ISIS?
To openly arrest journalists?
To have political leadership ruled by religion?

Why?

This.

The backdoor into the EU is going to be left wide open for ISIS and other radical groups if Turkey is formally made a official member of the EU. If it occurs it'll just be a matter of when and how rather than a question of if this will occur.

There are 2.5 million Syrian refugees in Turkey.
A few of them are in refugee camps, but the majority just lives spread over the country.

Erdogan (the Turkish prime-minister, and a crypt-fascist it seems) sees an opportunity for Turkey. He asked the EU for 3 billion euros to pay to help ease with the refugees in Turkey. The big threat is: if the EU doesn't pay up, Turkey will make sure that those 3 million refugees will be kicked out of Turkey, and will end up in Europe. And most will end up in Germany. (And some in Sweden and the Benelux).

So Merkel has made a counter offer: "what if we allow Turks to enter the EU without visa ?"

Erdogan's answer: "YES. We want Turks to be able to enter the EU without a visa. But we also want 3 billion Euros. Or else".

Merkel's next answer: "what if we consider Turkey to enter the EU again ? We can do it at an enhanced speed !" That plan was off the table a few years ago. Erdogan has moved Turkey back towards the dark ages a few centuries. Pushing Islam, throwing opposition and journalists in jail, embezzling a few billions in public funds for his family (yep, really).

Erdogan's response: "YES ! We want back in the EU. As quick as possible". "Oh, and by the way, we still want 3 billion euros, or else we'll dump an extra 3 million Syrian refugees into Greece".

End result: EU allows all Turks to enter without visa, Turkey will enter the EU soon, and we pay those bastards 3 billion euros.

Money probably supplied by the EU from EU funds. Money paid by Europeans, who do not have any say into who is in the European Commision. (The Commision is like the European government. Not decided by elections, but they appoint themselves. Their meetings are secret. Their plans are secret. They are not accountable to anyway, and certainly not accountable to the EU citizens/voters). It's a fucking travesty.

I'm not sure why Erdogan wants to be in the EU. He doesnt seem the type to want to be bound by the European Court of Human Rights.

In Turkey, they still jail people for mentioning the Armenian genocide. I don't see EU accession happening and besides the EU's currency is in crisis... only a fool would want to be a part of their austerity at a time like this.

That as well, but I suppose that depends on how Turkeys economy is doing at the moment.
