German gov't considers jail time for gamers

that is messed up,

according to the article,

The proposed legislation comes on the heels of a shooting on November 20 where an 18-year-old student went on a shooting rampage and wounded six people in his school before killing himself. Backers of the bill also point to the 2002 Erfurt massacre where another German student shot 13 people, according to the paper. Both incidents have been blamed in the media on violent games, and much has been written about the two shooters' fascination with games such as Half-Life: Counter-Strike.

People need to stop blamming video game because people go out and shoot people. That 18 year should know better.

Wow, thats crazy.

I'm not sure how the German government works, but don't the people there elect their officials? Meaning that any official who votes for such an inane bill would be voted out of official next term.

crytek is planning on relocating out of Germany if this legislation goes through.

The proposed legislation makes the future for German game companies unclear. One company, Far Cry and Crysis developer Crytek, has already made known its plans to relocate to another country should any legislation of this kind be made law.

I wonder if this is strictly for games with guns. Or if it's just for anything considered 'violent'. Throwing fireballs and burning people to death is pretty violent.. so there goes Mario Brothers.

I bet Jeffery Dahmer was influenced to eat people by playing endless hours of Pacman.

Frogger influences people to run things over.. or play in traffic.

Pong might make you want to hit things..

Paying crazy prices at the dentist might make somebody go on a violent rampage.. They should get rid of dental hygiene as well.

Most people in Germany and Europe support this kind of things. Games in the U.S are too violent, the U.S has some of the most relaxed laws on violent video game sales.

Shame they didn't pass this earlier. Really could have saved the world from the horror of Hitler.

LOL. I'm sure Hitler played a violent game of chess or something.

Honestly, I think the video game companies should start suing people who's kids go suicidal. Instead of pointing the finger at a limited outside stimulus like video games, how about something more ubiquitous like television. Or parents that are forced into dual income work, and not being able to be with their children.

Yeah, I have it on good authority that Hilter was an avid video gamer.

LOL, what a load of sh1t.

Of course, all those violent games are available in Europe too. And more.

It will never go through. This is just one of those ridiculous political kneejerk reactions to a tragedy - they think they have to be seen to 'do something' or it will be used against them in the next election.

Lawmakers Want to Hold Game Makers Responsible for Inspiring Crime 'Three Washington state lawmakers say it can't be anything good, and they want to hold the companies that make, sell and rent the games responsible for the effects they might have on the behavior of youngsters.'

More states target violent games 'Arkansas, state Senator Shawn Womack authored a bill that would require shops that rent or sell M-rated games to display them at a height of at least 5 feet from the floor. The bill, introduced on March 3, would allow the Arkansas Department of Public Health to fine vendors up to $500 each time they violate the law.'

Family Entertainment Protection Act 'FEPA would impose fines of $1000 dollars or 100 hours of community service for a first time offense of selling a "Mature" or "Adult-Only" rated video game to a minor, and $5000 or 500 hours for each subsequent offense. The bill also calls for a FTC investigation into the ESRB to ascertain whether they have been properly rating games.'

A more mature approach to video-game violence 'Gov. Blagojevich has proposed a law to make the sale of explicitly violent or sexual games to under-18 consumers a Class A misdemeanor, carrying a punishment of up to a year in prison or a $5,000 fine. He also wants to require video retailers to label games for content and post signs in their stores explaining the rating system for the games.'

There are plenty of crazy people in politic.
