Hmm, better not vote for Gephardt then. The MTA will just get even more spoiled and have even higher rates and even worse service than it has now...

Unions are outdated. From what I've noticed, they get less support from outside their circles nowadays.

The only Unions that are worth their weight it seems are the Trade Unions. In most areas the only really skilled Tradesmen belong to Unions.

Unions are ALMOST outdated for three principal reasons:

1. A lot of union jobs have moved overseas;
2. In the last 40 years employers have found its wiser to treat their employees with a little more equanimity and fairness than to have to bargain with a union. Disney has managed to keep most of the unions out by paying just a little better than most jobs in the area. Works like a charm;
3. The culture has gotten hopelessly right wing-particularly since the '80's-and conservatives don't favor unions. (BUT, I have no doubt the worm will turn.)

#1 doesn't relate to the trade Unions. That's why they will always be strong

Skipping back to Gephardt, I'm reminded of Will Rogers' statement. "I'm not a member or an organized political party. I'm a Democrat." I hate to see Bush and the Neos reelected but liberals who think like I do won't vote for a Senator who wrote George (I'll do the Right Thing) W. Bush a blank check to go to war. I don't think most of the Middle America Democrats will vote for Dean. Looks like the score will once again be: Forces of Good 0 - Buttheads 1.

I think the problem for the Democrats are that they don't understand the regular folk. They totally understand Barbara Streisand, but not middle america. The republicans, though, should be careful, because they can easily lose favor with the masses (see Bush the 1st).

Miguel, I think you're right, the Democrats that steer the party have trouble with middle America. Conventional wisdom has it that Clinton took the middle from the Republicans. Maybe. I happen to think Dean is a very reasonable man. Here in Berkeley, California, he's a moderate. To steal a phrase from the great orator, "Although I know it's true that Dean is too far to the left to be elected, it's hard for me to believe. "

The problem with the Democrats is that their Party has been hijacked by the Liberal extremists. Fsckers like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Gephardt scare the Moderates much less than the Fscktards that are in Charge now. To bad that the Republicans were so short sighted to nominate the Dub instead of someone who would have been a great President and done his party and America proud, John McCain! Frankly I am embarrassed that the Candidates for the Office are between the Dub and the Band of Bumblers that are vying for the Democratic nomination.

Red, I would have loved to have seen a Bradley McCain matchup. I think my slightly left of center leanings are known on this board and I tell you truly, I would have voted for McCain against Gore. One of the reasons I currently favor Dean is that I am so tired of bvllshit, "give 'em what they want to hear" politicians. I'm in California, and although I didn't support Schwarzennegger, I'd think about it again if we could get something done. I have a high regard for the fiscally conservative conservatives, but other policies from other right wing factions make me want to throw up.
