geotagging, GPS suggestions?

It seemed more appropriate for this forum. Anyone use a GPS to geotag their photos? I'm looking for a handheld one that will give me data, and preferably something that will output something I can use in LR (I haven't researched this in full yet to see what plugins might work tho).

Not looking for a pure logger, as I would like the functionality of a GPS for other things (http://geocaching.com if anyone is interested).

Was curious if anyone here bothered with the geotagging stuff and what they used.

and if for some reason i have to interface with the computer, I'd rather have it OS X compatible... tho if it works through a VM, I'm good too.
 
What's LR?

I geotag quite a bit. I use DNRGarmin to download and save the tracklogs. Then I use my own perl script to geotag the images. The script uses perl TK. If there is an OS X port for perl TK my script should run as I'm almost 94% positive I didn't use any Windows only functions in my script. However, my script is DNRGarmin dependent as it reads DNRGarmin's text output format. I don't know if you can use Wine to run DNRGarmin or not. My script outputs KML files for Google Earth or Google Maps, DeLorme Topo import files, and text files that DNRGarmin can use to make ArcGIS shapefiles. It also optionally geotags the image EXIF info and adds a user comment to the EXIF. It runs in batch mode processing all the image files in a specified directory. The EXIF geotags are in a standard format. I've tested the tags with flickr which correctly placed the images.

 
LR = lightroom. there's a guy working on a plug in for seamless GPS work. What GPS do you have? I'm looking at the Vista/Legend HCx right now. everything but the UI seems be be good (that and the fact it'll cost another $100 for detailed maps =().

 
I use Sunset GPS Logger software on my WinMo phone in conjunction with Geosetter software on the PC. Will likely purchase one of the small "clip on the strap" loggers if they drop below fifty dollars.

I use the Garmin GPSMAP 76S.

You can use just about any GPS unit for geotagging as long as it has the ability to download tracklogs to your computer.

This is a powerpoint presentation for a commercial package that works with a bunch of GPS units from different manufacturers. It provides a nice overview of the basics how many of the geotagging programs combine tracklogs with photos to geotag the photos. This one is pretty fancy and is priced accordingly. It doesn't look like they have an OS X version but it might be worth your time to look at the PPT anyway just to see how this works.
