Bush is going to be here tomorrow, some of the news stations have been camped out here since Thursday.

The Secret Service have been here all week and the Army is showing up tonight to help provide support.

Everyone I talk to has mixed feelings about him comming here, Bush Sr. gave our commencement speach in 1990 and Richard Nixon in 1974.

What would you think if he was going to give your commmencment? Would you go to the ceremony?

What the University has about it

I am by no means a fan of his at all, but I don't know if I would outright boo him if he was speaking at my ceremony. Of course, I don't think i'd applaud either.

What the University has about it

I would think it would pretty damn cool to have the president of the united states speaking at my graduation....

But no, Purdue seems to think its "cool" and "traditional" to have the president of our university be the commencement speaker:disgust:

I would be very honored to have a Pres give the speech, but also very disappointed that the Pres is GW.

At the end of it, he can say "Hi, I'm George W. Bush, and I approved this message!"

I wouldn't boo and would applaud. I understand that some may disagree with his political views, but he is not there to discuss politics. You also might not like him as a person (although I doubt many of you know him on a personal level). However, he is there to congratulate you on graduating college, not to preach about politics and the country's government, military, or economy. An applause only shows that you are thanking him for his speech, it is simply the respectful thing to do. In no way does an applause endorse his political decisions.

I applauded when Clinton gave a commencement speech I was in attendance for.

I would do the same for Bush.

Geesh, when did America get to be so petty?

*cries* Wahh! I don't like the current President... I'm going to boo him for showing up as a guest at our commencement! Waahh! *cries*

I applauded when Jessie Jackson gave the commencement speech at my University, but I did not hollar "Amen" when he asked for it, which was about a dozen times throughout his speech.

I would personally give him a standing ovation. Unfortunately, I would rather he did not show up at my University, because the dominating amount of hippies and hardcore leftwingers would no doubt do their best to embarrass themselves and the University in any way possible. :disgust:

What younger generations seem to forget it you respect the OFFICE, not necessarily the man. If you boo or try to embarass the man for speaking at your commencement, which is an honor whether you like him or not, then you will just end up embarassing your School and showing what type of people you really are.

IMO, it's the president of the US coming to speak at your commencement. If he's Bush, or Clinton, or anyone else, I would not do anything negative. It's neither the right venue, nor would I want to ruin my commencement with it. Let it be an important commencement, and be happy with that.

It's a safe bet there won't be much applause, then.
