Oh no, are you serious? :(

So if I pre-order it, it may not arrive for months/years if he hasn't finished it yet? :(

I'm flying to his hometown this weekend, maybe my fiance and I can hunt him down and force him to finish the book "Misery"-style. :D

Martin's last update on the progress of the book was in January. This is still the most recent update on the book:

I said that I hoped to have the book done by the end of the year. Famous last words. No, it's not done, though I am getting closer. I have more than thirteen hundred pages in final draft form and another hundred or so in roughs or fragments, but there are still some chapters yet to write. I'm telling myself that I'm on the home stretch. As soon as FEAST as done, I will announce it here.

It'll be worth it. It's better to wait than have him release a crappy book before it's finished. But man, it'll be hard to live up to the other ones.

dude, this book is going to be frickin' huge. Hopefully he doesn't sucumb to Robert Jordan syndrome...
I hope not.

What's Robert Jordan syndrome?

Robert Jordan Syndrome is stretching 1 or 2 books worth of material into 10-12 books so that you go chapter after chapter after chapter where nothing happens other than lengthy descriptions of hair and dress styles.

George R.R. Martin doesn't seem likely to catch it. The first 3 books of the series were so jam packed with action, twists and turns that even if he devolves to where only 1/10th as much is happening it'll still be 10 times more exciting than Jordan.

have you ever read the Wheel of Time? The series is like 10 books, and a prequel, but he hasn't done anything with the actual story since, like, what, book six or seven? 800 pages or so a book for basically nothing. (the last major thing is when Rand cleansed saidin that was book 8, but that wasn't even that important, yet...)

or what the dude above me said. He's worse than Dickens.

Maybe he keeps pushing it back because he forgot the names of half of the characters. I know I'm sure as hell going to have to read the first three again since I can't remember anything about them other than that I loved them and that there were a hell of a lot of characters.

Not me! I've read the books so many times (and i NEVER read a book more than once), i doubt i'll ever forget the characters even if i don't pick up the book again for the rest of my life. Arya and Tyrion are what i'm really wanting to read about.

That's not a bad thing. I just wish there was a firm date, even if it were five or six months, so I could plan when to start reading the first three again.

But on the bright side at least half the major characters are dead by now. That's the beauty of Martin, you never know who is going to go from hero to the grave and which beaten contender will suddenly find himself on top again. Every time I think I've got a handle on the series and have figured out who's going to be standing at the end that person dies. I've never seen an author so prone to kill off major characters.
