My biggest grievance is the Cantina scene in Episode IV. Han Solo sneaks his weapon out under the table and blasted the fvck out of that bounty hunter scum. Why did GL feel the need to mess with the original scene and have Gredo fire before Han fired? That just ruined the entire scene for me...

Haven't made it to the end of the movie yet...

wait until you get to the middle of the movie--the death star only stuns everyone on Alderaan because it was deemed too violent to blow the planet up.

Oh well, it was a Christmas gift. I hadn't watched them because the person who gave me the gift bought me the full screen version and when I went to exchange it they didn't have the widescreen version in stock.

Still, I'm pissed...and yes, this is the DVD release.

didn't notice that when I watched the dvd's last week. I'll have to give it another go.

my biggest issue was that they tossed in Hayden Christianson (sp) at the end of Return of the Jedi, instead of the original actor. seems really pointless -- why de-age Anakin back to when he was a teenager? neither Yoda or Obi-wan got younger.

You mean the part where Solo's head jumps sideways without his neck or body moving? If so, I agree, worst part of all 3 movies, and the most ridiculius "special effect" I've ever seen. How ol' Darth Gullet watched that scene and decided it was finished, I'll never understand.

The reason Lucas gave for making the changes is that it's how he originally envisioned the movie(s), but the technology wasn't around or he couldn't afford to use it. That explanation may hold water for some changes, but there's no explanation for why he couldn't have shot the catalina scene the way it is in the DVD release IF he wanted to, therefore it is NOT how he originally envisioned the scene. Hence, he's a lying rat bastard.

Obviously he wanted to make Han Solo look like less of a bad guy... maybe he didn't originally intend to include him in the sequels, but because of his popularity he wrote him in? I don't know, I'm not a die-hard Star Wars fan.

Isn't the DVD release the same as the special edition VHS release..? Aside from the extra DVD..

No. Jabba is different, the cantina scene changed, among other things...

Hmm..I'll have to watch it (we have the WS DVD set..haven't watched it yet).

In the SE VHS release, Greedo shot first...what's different on the DVD?

Greedo still shoots first, but Solo moves different and it looks like they fire around the same time. It still looks horrible, but doesn't ruin the movie (at least for me it doesn't).

Other changes. Might be concidered spoilers I guess.

The new Jabba scene looks a lot better than the SE version, but still not that great.

In Empire Strikes back the Emperor is replaced by the actor that plays him in Episode 1, 2, 3, and 6. I like the ideal of the change, but the new scene looks strange.

Hayden is now at the end of Jedi instead of Shaw in the force ghost scene. Eh... I don't know. I'm waiting on Episode 3 to see how or if this is explained.

The images are cleaned up, but there is still problems with light saber colors. (Lukes stays white then switches to green in the falcon scene in ANH/Vaders saber is now pink sometimes.)

I thought with the cleaned up images the SE effects blended in better with the film.
