Here is the story on the NYTimes.com page. Yes it's six pages long but the eguy lived an incredibly long and interesting life.

For those who don't know who he is, Kennan was the architect of the US Cold War policy of containment and also one of the chief masterminds of the Marshall Plan.

Edit: What do you guys think of his policy's and ideas? Especially containment at all times short of war?

i'm surprised that there is no comment on this man who had such a great role in American Foreign Policy.

Edit: Could it be that people here love partisan hackery over actual politics/news?

Thats because the majority of the posters don't have a clue who the hell George Kennan was!
They need time to google his name so they can parrot a predigested bio of his life...

Interesting obituary. I think that Kennan recognized that containment might not be the most efficient method of dealing with the commies, but was the only politically palatable option available. Most of the ideas that are credited to him are historically successful in practice, and as such, I tip my hat to his life and to the contributions that he made to shape the world that we now live in.
