Geologists: What is the difference between schist and granite?

I watched a rather crappy documentary on the NYC subway system and they said mentions large amounts of a type of granite called schist that was particularly hard to work with (bore/drill).

But is there a difference between the two?

Yeah there is. Granite is an igneous rock, and schist metamorphic. Granite can in fact be a parent rock of schist.
