- Honestly? Because its god damn beautiful. As someone who grew up in Southern California and now lives in Northern California, the sheer amount of green in the deep south is magical. Also, history of the eastern states has a sort of allure to a westerner where everything seems to have been built in either the last 50 or 20 years. Most people are perfectly polite, they know how to fry things, and everything is third world levels of cheap.

This story is some straight up bullshit though. Throw the book at 'em.

Never seen the region, except on TV, where it's certainly beautiful, but sadly full of zombies.

Seriously why the fuck would anyone wanna live in a hurricane central State?

For Georgia it's really not that big of a deal. Georgia is "buffered" by Florida, and by the time the vast majority of the storms make landfall, they weaken considerably. Hurricane Michael was a drastic departure from the usual for the region, which had Category 4 winds all the way to Albany.

Most of the storms that enter the gulf hit every other state on the coast except Georgia.

Go check it out sometime. I've lived in California my entire life, went to Mississippi a couple months back expecting to see overalls, inbreeding, and racism. What I found was a lot of polite people living a good life in a beautiful area.

The zombies were never as big of a problem as they made it look like on tv.

Sounds like you had a wonderful stop at that gas station.

I noticed some politeness too, problem was it was greatly overshadowed by the good ol boy attitude and contempt for anything not Southern or deep fried. Family friends of the person I was with asked what church I attend, and when I replied that I don't, they walked away without another word and we found out later were informing others they should avoid me. I've never encountered that anywhere else except Florida panhandle. Not in New England, not in Europe, not even in the Middle East.

If you didn't see racism and bigotry then I don't think you looked very hard. Mississippi is a concentrated version of the rest of the South, I think only Alabama can give it a run for "institutional racism."

To see that part of the south you gotta go out into the country where the closest neighbor is 2 or 3 miles away. Now if you really wanna see the shit you need to go to eastern Kentucky, where the women have beards, the men have 1 tooth and sheep stay far away from the cliffs.

The Walking Dead isn't a documentary which I know you know so I have no clue why I am even pointing it out.

"Separate but equal" sure didn't equalize things much back in the day did it? The conservative controlled Supreme Court gutting a particular provision of the Voting Rights Act brought that feature right back into play for those (mostly southern Repub controlled) states that were previously controlled by that pre-clearance rule.

I'm sure the conservative majority of the Supreme Court didn't mean to do that, right? Just as they decided they liked gerrymandering just the way things are where minority party rule for the Repubs is "democracy in action" and A-OK.

I was impressed enough that I intend to move there when I evacuate California. I simply didn't see the bigotry you claim exists, something I expected and was looking for.

CA has both gerrymandering and vote harvesting, the democrats seem to have done alright with it.

You expected a stereotype and didn't find it thus there is no bigotry as far as you perceive.

Lol what? California took redistricting away from politicians over a decade ago. It's done by an independent citizen commission now. Less talking points more facts please.

Truth isn't truth, remember? Sometimes I think Greenman doesn't understand what's become of the GOP. The fact that they're still peddling trickle down economics should tell him something, but it doesn't.

That seems accurate enough. Are you suggesting they were hiding it in the hopes that I'd like the place and move there? While I am an impressive specimen, I doubt they'ed go that far,;)

I've spent some time for work in the south over the years and I can see how you would have that impression. This impression is not however reality. The veneer of southern hospitality does somewhat disguise the true nature of the place and many of the people. Over the long term you'll experience a gradient of that however depending how urban the environment is. Still the things that I've had confided in me based on people's assumptions based on my appearance are striking.

The area I was in would be considered the butt end of nowhere by California standards. 15k people spread out over 30 square miles. I liked the area because it was so damn green, and so amazingly clean. Population is 38% black, a hell of a lot more diverse than where I live now.
I found the same thing in Texas, a whole bunch of well mannered people with quiet lives that mind their own business. My kind of folks.

BTW. Apologies to the OP for totally derailing his thread.

It's fun to read your posts while trying to keep a straight face, it's almost as if you believe the shit you type and are paid to be wrong all the time...

I foolishly pushed the button that allowed me to read your post, and remembered why I put you on ignore. Your an ass. You have nothing of substance to add to the conversation, so you jump in with bucket full of stupid and think it's pertinent. I could get over the ass part of it, but the stupid just doesn't work.
I'll check back in a year or two and see if you've learned how to express yourself as an adult.

I think you were impressed by the low cost of living and are looking for reasons to justify a move to an area with a political outlook more inline with your own. I doubt it's for the poverty, racial inequity, lack of healthcare or 49th rank in education.

The low cost of living is a definite draw, though I do have to factor in the cost of the golf cart I'll need to drive to the bathroom from the sofa. I didn't see the poverty, or the racial inequality, but me being there will be one more voice against it, so that's a net plus for the down trodden. I assume the local hospital accepts my insurance, and it appears to be a good one. I'm not worried about the quality of education since I won't be attending classes, though I will contribute by paying my taxes.
I will have to give up homeless encampments and people shitting on the street, I may also miss some of the panhandlers that hang around.
As far as people being politically aligned with me goes, I don't care at all. I've lived my entire life in a deep blue area, the vast majority of my clients lean far left, it just doesn't matter. I respect their differing points of view, and our relationships are always cordial. So no, politics doesn't enter the equation. Cost of living is very high on the list, and quality of life is number one. That's what lead me to look at the south to begin with, and since I don't hate people because of their politics, red or blue doesn't matter to me.

Have you ever had someone leave a flaming bag of dog shit on your porch? This is actually a serious question and not my usual whit because you mentioned people shitting in the streets.

Never had that happen. I live in a reasonably quite neighborhood, though every few years a band of thieves drive through and rob every truck on the street. They've got me three times since 1991.

Pst, I have to hit the same button to read your bullshit. Trust... Enjoy that you played the snowflake victim card, however. You don't get absolved and get to step on the podium and wear a special badge because think your tripe is above any of the replies regarding the stench... SHIT in SHIT out. Get over it.

p.s. Do yourself a favor and don't hit the show ignored content if are just going melt... You've chosen your role here. Deal with it.

I grew up in Oklahoma and lived here most of my life. I was driving through Tennessee a couple months ago and I kept thinking "man these people are rednecks."

I have some cousins that are nice people, and I don't think are at all racist to individuals, but are racist as hell about the masses they don't know. I think that is true of a lot of people in the South nowadays. That is, they would have no problem being friends with, working with, or employing blacks or Hispanics and I doubt they'd give much thought about them being black, but they'll turn around and say some really racist stuff about blacks in general. Actually one of them just adopted a black daughter.
