LOL! Just looked at the 'server' and realized that the cpu hs/fan that's in there is missing a fin on the fan! So *THAT'S* what all the noise was! ;) Replaced the hs/fan with one that I had kicking around here (7500rpm and not as noisy as the damaged AMD retail fan!) and reapplied some AS5 on the CPU and temps are running ~47C at idle... case temp is listed at 20C with the side open and a 120MM fan blowing air into the case. Added another 128Mb ram to the 512 that was in there (all that I had kicking around!). Hopefully this will make a difference. :)

Okay... here's what I'm looking for...

- 1 rock solid Athlon XP motherboard... I'm thinking the all-in-ones that I used for DC crunchers are not ideal as server mobos.

- 1 or 2 ~20g 7200rpm ATA100 hard drives. I'm thinking 2 so that one can be the backup drive GOT ONE.. A 40G! THANKS VERY MUCH GARRY (CONFUSED)!!!

I've got plenty of DDR and SDRAM, old PCI vidcards and nics kicking around, and I've got a case and several PSUs, so I think I'm all set for these parts.

If you've got some of these kicking around and want to sell them, LMK!

I don't have anything, but I figured I would give you a bump and offer my services.

I know you may be switching over to linux or a BSD and if you need any help getting apache/MySQL/Oracle or anything else you may use working just let me know. I am sure many others here will help out too. :)

Thanks! I've been giving Apache some thought... not sure that I'll jump to Linux just yet... too much change at once may make it difficult for me to react quickly when... I mean IF... something breaks

That is true, don't want to make too many changes at once.

Well just so you know, almost any Linux distro will install MySQL and Apache for you. Should be pretty easy to setup. :) Now depeding on how your scripts run there could be some issues, but nothing that could not be figured out. :) Well ifyou do decide to switch let me know. :)

Setting up a linux server on another machine just to test and learn (while crunching on it of course!) is an idea. Run the site off of whatever you are using now, and set something else up to learn it. ;)

I'll look around for parts, but I think I'm using all my hard drives and the best motherboard I have that isn't used is a K7M. :p

I've got an XP1800 on the current mobo... plan on continuing to use that chip... it seems to be more than adequate... the bottleneck at the moment is the hd... I think it's an ATA66 and seems kinda slow when running the D2OL hourly nodes process which is probably the most disk intensive. I rarely see the CPU utilization go significantly high during normal processing, so I figure there are enough horses under the hood for what I need :)

Geoff,

I put aside a 40gb 7200 rpm Maxtor drive ready for any servers I would have built for this task. However, as you have taken this task on, and have more bandwidth than I do, then I will donate the hard drive to you :)

Contact me to let me know your details so I can send it to you :) It's currently just sitting in my server at home, without anything on it! ;)

Garry- that's very generous... lemme pay you something for it though... or is there any hardware you need?

I doubt it, but if you've got an Athlon XP waterblock (or two) then I could do with those...otherwise I can't think of any hardware I might need! ;)

how about my 2 gb scsi drive that pulls 3.5 amps off the 5v rail...takes up 2 5.25" slots, and is best used as a boat anchor?

j/k definitely not giving it away ;)

this post doubles as a bump

ken008 - thanks for the offer... not sure that I need to go to raid at this time... basically was just looking for a pair of faster drives that I could Ghost from one to the other as a means of backing up :)

If you want one, I've got a 40Gb Maxtor drive laying around here.. Don't know the type, but it's 7200rpm.. Only problem is, it might be just as expensive to send it over then to buy a new one..
If you have any idea about the shipping costs, PM me if you want it! (you don't have to pay shipping!!)

Big  to Confused for donating that HD!!

Geoff, I got a mobo that would run your XP but to be honest, the reason why I don't use it is because it is NOT rock solid. It failed on me and was RMAed 2 times until I gave up and bought another mobo. And it would only run your XP as a 1600 (IIRC). So I guess that's not what u r looking for but if everything else fails ...

Definately a big  to Confused... I'll have to send some Canadian beer though.. I doubt he really wants a Bud! ;)

BlackMountainCow - the only problems I have with the one that I have is the occasional lockup (which I'm pretty sure are heat related) and the sucky performance... not sure which one bugs me more! :D That machine will soon be moving into the climate-controlled server room here at work, so the lockups may not be an issue. Whether they are not heat-related or not, I'm still not happy about the performance, but that may be the HD more than the mobo :)

Upping the amount or speed of the RAM might be more of a performance gain then the CPU or hard drive I think.. When MySQL (or any other database) can get it's hands on a big amount of mem it really rocks! My site is running on a Xeon 733Mhz (loads of L2 cache) and with 2Gb ECC Ram. Last year it only had 384Mb or ram, but since the upgrade speed has really incresed.

@ CyGoR... interesting... I've got 512Mb in there now and it seems zippy enough except for the 5-10 minute period when the D2OL nodes data is being updated. I'll see what I can do in that area... the mobo that's there only have 2 DDR slots... another reason for a better mobo! :)

@ Rich... Thanks! :)
