Just read about it on our local news website..

Some couple got arrested because they buried a box in front of a school (mistake)

A school official called the police, and they dug it up.. and found a box filled with electronics (gps primarily)

apparently the person is a Geocacher ... they bury stuff and post GPS Coordinates online for people to 'find it'

WTF? who thought this up and that it was a good idea??

I've seen it done a lot...It's fun!

But on a school...where they constantly worry about bombs.... It's stupid!

Geocaching is EXTREMELY popular. If you go on one of the main geocaching sites, I'd estimate there are probably upwards of 100 caches around you right now that you could go find. When my best friend and I get together, we will often spend an afternoon locating new ones around town.

Well it's like a challenge to see if you can find these items.

Then when you get them it's a surprise.

Like Christmas, but with a shovel.

I've always wanted to get involved with this, it really sounds like fun. It's the the cacher's fault that people are paranoid.

The idea is that you bury a parcel of something, doesn't really matter what, to leave as a gift for fellow geocachers.

I don't see the 'excitement' in building model railroads, either..but some people like it. To each his/her own!

There's a lot of different caches. Some contain trinkets that you can take with you, most contain a list of the people that have been to the site before (which you sign upon locating the cache), some contains riddles/puzzles that help you find the next cache in a set, etc. You can do anything you want. It's not so much about the end result as it is about the search.

i'm one of those "live and let live" people.... you wanna bury something for others to find.. go ahead..

but really.. THINK about where ya bury it.

burying a box on school property is not the brightest idea around... its GONNA arouse a suspision if someone sees ya doing it.

if i see someone burying something anywhere near where i work or live, i'm gonna call the cops too if i dont know what they're doing.

If someone asked would you let them bury it near your house?

I don't believe you are suppose to be burying the caches.. Anyway, sometimes it is pretty damn hard to find the caches because they can be small, blended into the environment (ie fake rocks in a whole pile of rocks or a fake bolt in a pole or something like that)

Bear and bobcat dens make a great geocache location. Should be a one of those xcxd comics.

I could have sworn on the geocache home page they warn about attempting to hide caches on school or government property.

We've never seen one buried. Usually they're in an ammo box, or tupperware container - anything that will stay reasonably waterproof. Around here they hide them under a log or near the trunk of a tree with good cover.

I read about this in Southern Living actually. I want to try it out.

edit: I read about Geocacher's. Not people getting arrested for it.

Guy I used to work with was really big into geocaching, it sounds like a lot of fun always wanted to try it.
