Genvalia Coffee

Has anybody tried their service or even their coffee? The wife and I are interested in a promotion they have right now.

Yes. I was a Gevalia member for a few years. The service was good and the "hook" deal to get you to try them out was too good to pass up. Once my kids came along, I stopped the service and just started getting whole-bean Eight-O-Clock at the supermarket and grinding my own. I do miss some of the seasonal select varieties though. It's a good company and they have a totally web-based ordering system and online billing.

We're currently getting it. The Kenyan coffee is G-O-O-D!

And the coffee maker they gave us for free is pretty nice.

That's what we are brewing now, eight-o-clock that is.

I just get starbucks beans since they have a store on every floor of my apartment building* but my parents have used Gevalia for over a decade and are happy with the service.

* slight exaggeration, but there are three of them within walking distance plus grocery stores.

Starbucks gets a bad rap amongst coffee snobs, but they are actually really good and closest to what coffee is supposed to taste like of the mass-market brands. Gevalia on the other hand, is quite bad.

Why don't you drink any pre-roasted coffee? and you brew unroasted green coffee beans also?

It tastes bad. Think "Chips-Ahoy" verse homemade cookies.

No, I roast them first a week ahead of time; I grind seconds before I brew.

ah I see, I imagine it would taste better but I guess the average person is not willing to roast their own. $5 per cup at Starbucks, what a deal!

What equipment do you use? I'd like to grind my own espresso right before I make it...

I've seen coffee roasters on shows about coffee but that's it, never for sale. I just use a blade coffee grinder for my espresso but I'd like to get a burr gear grinder.

Roasting the finest coffee grown in the world, such as Bill McAlpine's LaMinita, I pay about $6.80 per pound.
That will make 2.25 GALLONS of coffee, or 36 cups, or 48 "coffee" cups.
~19 cents per 8oz. cup

We were going to join to get the coffee machine as well, but found a Thermal Cafe brewer at Lowes last weekend. We had an old portable coffee makes that just quit. The big problem I have is if coffee sits on a warmer and is exposed to air it gets too bitter for me to drink. This new machine brews right into a thermos and has a self seal lip to prevent the fresh brew coffee from aging. We really like it.

Mmmmmm fermented nugget of poop......
Have you ever tried this? Is it Austin Powers favorite coffee?

Can't say that I've actually tried it but I think I would but only after taking sniff first. I like the animated logo. It's got to be better than monkey poop coffee.

I got in on one of their promo deals last year and got a nice timer coffee pot. The coffee was quite good IMO (though there are obviously some people here whose coffee snobbishness far exceeds my own), and they were nice when I called to cancel (it wasn't THAT good!). Overall I was very happy with the experience.

You getting in on the free programmable 12-cup coffeemaker? I just signed up a couple weeks ago under that promotion - haven't heard anything from them yet.

I did do some research on it prior to signing up. Seemed like it was mostly negative reviews of their coffee, however, they all seemed to originate from "coffee snobs". Personally, I think Starbucks is great so I figure I'll like this stuff too. Some people complained it wasn't quite as strong as most other coffees though. They have plenty of varieties though, including dark roast if you find the normal roast isn't strong enough. At $15/lb I probably won't stick with them too long though - mostly just signed up for the free coffeemaker, since a programmable one runs at least $20 in the store anyways.
