MSDN copies are NOTORIOUS for setting off the alarms. So are legitimate VLK licenses (a legit VLK license becomes a blacklisted VLK license if a certain number of clients talk to the main Windows Update server within a certain amount of time - the workaround for this is to do whatever Microsoft wants you to do to mirror Windows Update locally, which involves buying Server 2003 and setting up ActiveDirectory, which basically requires you to license at least 2 copies of Server 2003)
-We had that happen on campus recently. They were setting up a new lab, and updating the PCs, when suddenly, they started failing validation. The volume license is for something like 150 thousand copies, of which they've used NOWHERE NEAR THAT MANY. "The Man" was not happy. All the domain controllers are now mirroring the updates as per his conversation with Microsoft.
