Gentoo!!

This thing just flat out fly's.
I was running Mandrake 8.2 with KDE 3.0
Same KDE3.0, much faster on Gentoo.
Don't even think about it on anything less than a 450Mhz machine. The compile times will kill you. Same goes for net access. Modems need not apply, unless you've got a dedicated phone line and don't mind being online for a few days straight.

Tiger,

Can you give me a ballpark estimate of your compile times? I'm going to put Gentoo on my secondary machine (P2-233 96MB), and was wondering how much time I need to set aside before it's "done" (X, KDE, Mozilla, etc).

Thanks!

I like it too, but i'm having a hell of a time setting up Alsa.

I have a SB Live 5.1. I should be able to use the snd-emu10k1 module, but I can't seem to get it to work.

There's no updated instructions, so I'm pretty much left out to dry since I have no exp dealing w/ Alsa configuration.
Is there anyone out there wanting to point me in the right direction? 🙂

Travail,
I've got a 1G T-bird w/256M of memory.
I built mine from a stage 1 archive and it took right at an hour to bootstrap it.
You can cut that time down significantly by using a stage 3 archive.
X and KDE are going to be killers. It took right at 4 hours to do mine.
With a 233 you're probably looking at 3-4 times as long.

EHobaX,
Compile the SBLive drivers in the kernel.
I did and sound took right off after install, even the annoying KDE3 stuff.

You see. The thing is, I did that already. 😛
Plus I emerged the Alsa drivers as well w/ OSS.

when I run amixer i get:

amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such device

EDIT: You're talking about selecting is into the kernel at the menuconfig, right?

Yep,
If you've got the drivers built in the kernel don't try automounting them as modules.
The desktop config docs say this somewhere in that sound config section.

So, I just select it in the menuconfig and it should be peachy keen?

I'm installing Mandrake right now just to see if the sound card is working. 😛
I may have gotten the stupid plug in the back in the wrong spot. Oh well.

If the sound works in 'drake, I'll try that menuconfig option. Did you put ALSA as a USE variable?

The only USE variable I used was "cups" when I emerged KDE and X.
Need to get cracking on getting my deskjet working.

Hrmm.. maybe my problem is that I dont' use KDE. I use Fluxbox.

I got 'drake installed in like 15 min and sound works in it. I'll try the Gentoo
install again w/o screwing w/ ALSA after I boot up. 🙂 Tell you how it goes
by tomorrow. Heh.

Tiger,
Thanks for the info. I started the Gentoo install about an hour ago... Timing is somewhat important because the large builds need to be finished before the 233's primary user returns home (Thursday).
