Gentoo sounds a little too advanced for you...like others have said. But I personally love it, and once you're a little more comfortable with Linux, I'd give it a shot. I know this can get a little religious for some people, so I'm not going to tromp on anyone's choice, but I'll just say that it's the Linux incarnation of everything I love about FreeBSD. Great community, great docs, very powerful but easy to use if done right.

Actually, Gentoo's community is really one of the best selling points. forums.gentoo.org is hands down the best resource for any distro I've found anywhere. Hell, it's the best Linux discussion board period.

Yep, the community is awesome. I never had a problem that wasn't already solved in the forums. I just searched for the problem I had and there was a ***HOWTO: Solve <xxxxx>*** thread already in existence.

I'd recommend Gentoo if you either have a laptop right next to you with the documentation or print out the documentation. Its not hard, just takes comprehension. Otherwise get an easy distro like Ubuntu or Mepis.

noob = stay AWAY from gentoo, it will most likely cause you to give up on linux and is the absolutely WORST way to get a first impression of linux. You need a "everything works out of the box" distro with a simple, quick and smooth install. Therefore, I recommend Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandrake or Mepis.
