1. I assume the fstab file was a file that i was supposed to type out, right? I did becasue I typed hte command and it said it was a new file, so I prodceed to ype it out.

2. When I type "passwd", it says access is denied

3. Installing grub works, but after I quite and try to access the menu.lst file in "boot/grub/" it says
"Could not open the file for writing: No such file or directory"

and this after the grub setup says it created the directory

so what do I do..kepp in mind I DO NOT know my way around a kinux box...so babiesh ridicule is accepted..as long as I get help..in the end

You missed steps if the fstab file wasn't there. It looks like either a: you didn't untar the file system to the right point, or b: you didn't switch to the new environment at the correct step.

Basically it looks like you didn't follow directions if you got those errors.

yes you must have missed a step somewhere.. the fstab file should be there and you just need to edit it to match your
HDD setup.

Tip: be sure to read ALL the instructions (notes/warnings/etc) not just the code listings because there are some very important
pieces of info there that are easily missed

You did follow the install instruction to the letter, right?
If you did those instructions in order there should be an /etc/fstab file.
You probably miss typed the filename and nano opened a new file.
