Genocide history

Why is the Jewish genocide history the only one that's accepted as common knowledge in "genocide history"? I'm sure the average person has no idea at all what's happened in Cambodia, East Timor, Yugoslavia, etc..in times that weren't too long ago. I know I didn't have any idea what happened, and is happening in those parts in the world today until pretty recently. I mean, some of the people of these countries put Saddam to shame for the "ruthless dictator" title.

I think it's a matter of what sorts of history classes you take and the last time you took them. I think in most general history type classes, the Holocaust is taught because it's associated with WWII. If you were take more specific history classes, for example classes you would encounter in higher education, then you would be exposed to the atrocities that you listed.

exactly, my hs history classes covered no other forms, nor even mentioned other genocides in histroy, but i have learned about them through other mean than the cali public school system

My school has classes like European History 1815-1914, History of Modern Middle East, Modern Asian History, and so on. Once you start getting into the specific history of each region, then you'll encounter more of the atrocities that the original poster listed.
