haha

check out the band OSI.
OSI Wiki

A huge chunk of the lyrical content found in the music of the band OSI revolves around communication and intelligence.

The singer (Kevin Moore) is a piano prodigy that, after leaving the band Dream Theater, left music so difficult to perform it took a Julliard prodigy to take over. Not to say its the most difficult to perform in the world EVER, but its definately not easy and I'd bet 95% of musicians would greatly struggle at the DT's more difficult music.

Instead of Dream Theater's complexity, the music is usually rather simple. Kevin Moore seems to care more about melody and musical aesthetics than technicality in the musicianship. Ironically; since the drummer of the band IS the drummer from Dream Theater and is a technical wizard as well. The duo seem to find the B side spaced out groove found in some of Dream Theater's earlier cd's, such as Space Dye Vest. The devil is in the details, and when this music gets appreciated in Hi-Fi, preferably an accurate set of headphones, you'll find your self discovering hidden sounds, passages, ideas, themes, and thoughts even after hundreds of listens. I definately recommend it in 224Kbps mp3 or higher. Flac even better. The song GO of the latest cd Free has some of the sharpest and craziest voice freezing and stuttering effects I've ever heard. Every little bit of sound is fine tuned and I equate the experience to that of a spinning and ever changing rubiks cube down a waterslide with killer light effects.

However, it can get technical, but its usually in the production. Some of the music would make a fan of Trent Reznor, and some the devotion of Pink Floyd fans. You'll hear tool, aphex twin, nine inch nails, metallica and so much else.

I highly recommend you find

for a quick download of a sample, which is probably the sickest bassline ever, go to their bass player's (on the first OSI cd) website. seanmalone.net Look for SHUTDOWN by OSI. His other stuff is cool too.

OSI is quite a good band. They have a lot of great songs. Definitely worth checking them out if you haven't heard them before.

haha case in point..

i was just listening to the song "all gone now" which is on Free.

The song's cymbal work was always strange to me, and now I get it.

The drummer is using his kick and snare for the drum parts, but the cymbal work is actually being played out as a harmony to the vocals. The drums are all in tune, even the cymbals, and are either a tasty interval, or the exact same pitch of the vocals. Theres a part towards the end when the vocal line goes "falling and falling and falling and falling and falling, etc.." and the drummer is playing that thing (pitch and rhythm wise) on his splash cymbals of which he has several in different tunings. The cymbals even fade out as the vocals do.

good stuff. ear candy!

The majority of what the listener ends up hearing from the OSI recording sessions are months of Kevin Moore's edits. Portnoy, the drummer, has made several comments about how what the recorded in the studio isn't even the same as the final product; lots of cut-and-paste. Moore replaced drums in certain parts or simply used Portnoy's recorded drums to create samples so as to fabricate entirely new drum tracks. Check out Moore's own post-DT work under the Chroma Key name if you like the laid-back, soothing stuff. He has a great ear for picking out the right sounds for his songs.

A++

www.chromakey.com

It has all of his Chroma Key work available, free, streaming from his site.

FYI, Save Memory hole for a later experience. It's pretty weird. I'd start with "you go now"

I'm not trying to call out some really obscure band that no one's heard of. One of OSI's songs was the title track to Tony Hawk's downhill Jam on the Wii. It's just that many people havent heard of them, so I just wanted to give an up for them. =)
