Genetics experts come..

Was reading this site..

And it stated that:

For a rough estimation of adult height, take the average of Mom's and Dad's height. Then add two inches for a boy or subtract two inches for a girl. So if you're 5 feet 2 inches and your husband is 5 feet 10 inches, the average between you is 5 feet 6 inches. Therefore, your son will likely grow to be 5 feet 8 inches, your daughter, 5 feet 4 inches. Of course, genetics being what it is -- unpredictable -- this gauge is not ironclad. Your child may turn out to be taller than the taller parent or shorter than the shorter one.

Is it just me or is this complete crap? I thought the "height gene", as with most other genes either just comes from one parent or the other, and that it's not a combination of the two. Sure it says it's a "rough estimation", but it seems that they're suggesting that that's how the majority sways..but I figure how tall a kid grows up to is determined by chance of which gene he/she got from his/her parent in this aspect.

I expect my son to be my height based on his current stature and age, so the "formula" isn't all that good perhaps, but height is determined by many genes, and comes from both parents.

If that estimate were true, the entire human race would be the same height in a few generations...

A child gets half of their chromosomes for their mom and half from their dad. I am willing to bet that height is determined by more than one gene. With everything else, for example nutrition and no mutation, remaining constant the child's height will be within a certain range of her's parents. The child's height would also depend on independent assortment and which parents' genes are translated at what time.
