Genesis had better versions of the NHL games. Also, Mortal Kombat was better on it.

SNES had things like F-Zero and Mario.

Depends on what games you like.

Me personally, sorry..... the NHL franchise was my childhood. Genesis.

And to be frank, Sonic the Hedgehog was pretty damned cool. So you don't loose alot vs mario. And you eventually got Echo which was an exclusive game that was DOPE.

I also get a Sega CD upgrade and 32X upgrade path.

Sega CD gives you Luna which is one of the best RPGs ever. not just me, Google it.

Mortal Kombat was redder on Genesis -- not "better." I can see where your confusion comes from.

Genesis still needs your vote, BTW.

For the 32X to be an "upgrade path," the path had to actually go somewhere. :colbert:

I had both. I was always the nerd gamer who got all the consoles.

And the SNES hands down was my preference. The Genesis had some quality titles, but little to rival the greatness of the SNES library. The SNES RPGs and platformers remain some of the best games in history, regardless of era or genre.

Easily one, if not the best libraries in gaming history.

I think the SNES has the greatest console library ever, so my choice here is clear.

i had both. won my genesis playing bubsy and sonic 2.

they both were good for different reasons.

if you wanted to play sports games, genesis owned.

graphics/colors/sound then snes owned.

overall if i had to pick just 1, it would easily be SNES though. all the nintendo games, street fighter (was definitely better on SNES than genesis), killer instinct, mk2, and tons of other games.

better is completely subjective.

snes had graphics + sound.

genesis had blood + control.

i also love how the sega cd version screen shots that posted before it was out, showed 100% arcade graphics. then when it came out on sega cd, it was straight up a genesis port with 100% arcade perfect sound. oh, and it took about 10 seconds for shang tsung to morph.

Interesting how the choice is so overwhelmingly clear in hindsight. Why was this choice so notoriously divisive back in the day?

Many Genesis owners back then just couldn't see it.

A lot of it was marketing as well.

Sega's 16-bit "SEGA!" marketing was cool, edgy, and "adult", and shat all over Nintendo's "Play it loud" ad campaigns.

It sounds silly, especially in retrospect, but when you're marketing to primarily 7-15 year olds, what's seen as "the cool one with attitude" goes a long way.

The Genesis also had generally better sports games (a very big market), and was seen as having more "mature" (graphic/bloody) content and versions, which ties into the above marketing angle.

it's the same thing now a days. people will put blinders on when they can only afford to purchase one console. they have a need to justify their purchase by making them feel like they always made the correct purchase.

I had both growing up but even still I feel like the SNES won hands down. The only people who would vote Genesis here are the people who only had that console. Old Sonic was good, but he's not THAT good.

You did it right, that person cheated by using the cleaning system.

You must've seen my pic floating around. ;)

IIRC, it was Model 2 Sega CD, Model 2 Genesis, 32X, Power Base Converter, Game Genie, three copies of Sonic and Knuckles, and Virtual Racing. The thing is, neither my Sega CD nor my copy of Virtua Racing worked, so I guess I cheated too. :(

I had them both but the Mega Drive (Genesis) was so much more fun. The SNES spent most of its time collecting dust.
