No parachute, crashes and buries itself on live TV.

:Q STORY

(I was watching it live, pretty embarassing for NASA I imagine)

now they're showing the two helos flying over to where it landed.....that's gotta suck to be them. all that time and training and the friggin chute doesn't even open...

What do you expect though, with or with out the parachute, their rescue plan was laughable.

What are you talking about? You mean the plan where, according to what was reported, they went 60 for 60 in trial runs?

Yeah, I'm a little unclear as to why they felt they needed stunt pilots to catch this thing with a hellicopter...ratings?

All the big news sources are covering the crash now. Our whole NASA plan needs heavy rethinking. Wastes a ton of money on so many failed missions. Sending people to Mars isn't the answer either.

just saw the overhead closeup - the pod is cracked open (i think)

EDIT: some official just said that it is severely damaged and did infact break up on impact...

sucks to be on the parachute recovery team right about now

Link "Two helicopters will be waiting to grab the capsule's parachute in mid-air as it glides toward Earth, so that it will not come in contact with Earth materials and contaminate its cargo of solar wind samples."

That sure didn't go according to plan.

Edit: Damn new system hates descriptive text in links.

::LOL::

Yep, from MSNBC, it should read:

PWN3D: Aerial video shows the crashed Genesis probe sitting in the desert at the Dugway Proving Ground in Utah.
