Thought I'd share this help file I just wrote. Hopefully someone can find it useful.



The Generic Slackware 9.0 Install Guide.

1 * The dawn of a new day.

a - Boot the computer from a slackware cdrom.
b - At the boot prompt press enter.
c - At select keyboard map press enter.
d - At the slack login, type root, and press enter.
e - Type cfdisk and press enter.
f - Make /swap
/boot
/
g - Type reboot and press enter.

2 * Preparing hard drive(s).

a - Follow steps a thru c in section 1.
b - Type setup and press enter.
c - Select addswap.
d - Setup target drives (the / partition).
e - Choose: "format quick with no bad block checking"
"ext3"
"4096"
f - Add /boot partition.
g - Select media source (cdrom).

3 * Package series selection.

a - Choose A AP D L N X.
b - Choose expert.
c.a - Series A
Deselect: kernel-ide, floppy, genpower, hotplug, isapnptools,
jfsutils, loadlin, minicom, pcmcia-cs. resiserfsprogs,
syslinux, umsdos-progs, xfsprogs.

c.b - Series AP
Deselect: a2ps, amp, apsfilter, espgs, gimp-print, gnu-gs-fonts,
hpijs, jed, joe, ksh93, mt-st, raidtools, rpm, vim, zsh.

Select: cdparanoia, cdrao, cdrtools, mad.

c.c - Series D
Leave as is.

c.d - Series L
Deselect: arts, esound, glibc-il8n, libieee1284, pilot-link.

c.e - Series N
Deselect: apache, autofs, epic4, fetchmail, inn, lftp, lynx,
nail, metamail, mutt, popa3d, ppp, ptoftpd, rp-pppoe, sendmail
tin, trn, ytalk.

Select: nmap.

c.f - Series X
Leave as is.

4 * Kernel, lilo, and basic configuration.

a - Install linux kernel from cd, select the bare.i/bzimage.
b - Skip make bootdisk.
c - Modem configuration, select no modem.
d - Install lilo, select simple.
e - Configure lilo to use frame buffer console, select standard.
f - Optional lilo append ="kernel perameters", hdc=ide-scsi.
g - Select lilo destination, select MBR.
h - Mouse configuration, select imps2.
i - GPM configuration, select no.
j - Configure network, select no.
k - Console font configuration, select no.
l - Hardware clock set to UTC, select no.
m - Timezone configuration, US/Eastern.
n - Select default window managers for X, select xinitrc.twm.

5 * The conclusion.

a - Warning: No root password detected, select yes.
b - Set root password.
c - Setup complete, select ok.
d - Scroll to exit.
e - Remove the cdrom.
f - Type reboot and press enter.

Additional information.

This basic guide assumes you already understand cfdisk, file systems,
and partitioning schemes using GNU/Linux. The default settings suggested
within this text are generic. You should definitely research the many
helpful slackware documents, well-coded packages, and options before
relying solely upon this form.
Select full instead of expert at 3b if you choose not to select packages
individually. You can also dismiss the L Series in this section if you
prefer installing libraries based on the software you plan to use. Please
note that I avoided some packages that include software that you may need
since I compile, fine-tune, and make packages from the source after a
primary install.

You may edit/include this document however/wherever as long the line below
is included.
