Generic or Brand name?

I'm looking to buy a new NIC for my cable modem connection. My new Mobo does not have any ISA slots. I must now find a PCI card to replace it. There seems to be quite a price difference between brand name (ie. 3COM) vs. generic cards. Is there a significant difference in performace/quality between brand and generic for these things? If so, can someone recommend one?

Thanks, -rams...

it really depends on what u want to do with your nic, and how much you're willing to spend.

basically, intel and 3com make the fastest and most reliable nics around. but there are quite pricey. but for most people, nics from dlink, netgear, linksys etc do just fine

here is a comparison of a variety of nics
