Generic Memory

I'm looking to upgrade the memory on my friend's iMac G5 (yea yea i know.) She currently has 1x256mb PC3200 DDR occupying 1 out of the 2 available slots. Will any unbuffered non-ECC PC3200 400hz DDR memory be compatible? I want to add 1GB to the other slot.

You can have mismatching pairs in the iMac, but I read something about how it would only perform 64bit vs 128bit. Will this have a significant impact on performance? I'm thinking either generic 1GB for $100 or err "Ramses" for like $127. Is it worth it to get the Ramses over the generic, or should I just get her Crucial, Samsung, or another better known brand, albeit for like $150+?

She's doesn't really do video editing or games or nothing like that, but does usually have 10 or more apps running at any time. Thanks in advance 🙂

Sorry man, cant help you out, I dont touch macs... ewwhh gross..... if its liek PC most mis match memory sticks will work and jsut run at the slower memory stick's speed. There somtimes some conflicks which you will realise once you machine hates you and reboots randomly and gives random blue screens of death. That happens somtimes. It is always best to get the same make of ram as you have already for compatiblity reasons, but that never stoped me for some non important computers.

Sorry for confusion, when I say mismatched I meant different size ram, not different speed. So it would be PC3200 256mb paired w/ a PC3200 1GB

Check to see if the motherbaord supports that large of a stick.. usualyl you can findout on the internet, or in the manual if you got one. Some computers only allow up to 512 per slot, or 512 in total, depends on the age of the machien and type.

FInd the manual or find it online
