I don't do many generics....if I do it's on canned veggies and stuff like that. I do like Shasta cream soda, but I wouldn't consider that a generic.
 
I go for the name brands with most things......some things you can get away with the generic's and not tell the diference.

Soda-name brand
cookies-name brand
clothes-name brand
socks-generic (can you really tell the diference, I usually throw my socks out after like 4 month's of use anyway).
 
I can drink most shasta soda.
The only time I can tell a difference with the socks is if I get good running socks from thorlo or athletech.
