Can you use generic ink cartridges with the newer Canon Printers? I read somewhere that they had a chip in them that prevented you from using generic. Is this true?

when the first chipped canon's came out years ago, people generally believed they would be able to bypass or hack the chips within a few months. apparently canon implemented such a strong encryption on the printers that to this day its still not possible to use generic chips. i actually bought a chipped canon printer when i could have got a non-chip one just because i was sure it wouldnt be long before they get around the security chips. its been over 2 years now... best thing to do is spend the $200 and get a ip4000 off ebay. youll save it all back in no time.
I've not had a lot of trouble transplanting the chips from the OEM ink tanks. You will need a sharp knife like an Xacto and a bit of mechanical ability, that's about all. You can see the transplant instructions at http://www.swiftink.com/canon_chip_instructions.gif - I just sent them a message asking if they had heard anything new on the chip cloning process.
Recently you could buy an iP4300 for less than a set of replacement tanks after rebate. IDK how often you'll find that good a deal, but Canon's replacement models usually come out at this time of year - maybe the iP4300 is about to be replaced..
