generic ide round cable = blue screen of death

Hi,
I purchased two the other day, one for dvd, and one for hard drives.

My DVD won't install anything -> blue screen

My hard drive crashes after a few hours of warcraft... -> blue screen

I am disgusted with round IDE cables now and went back to ugly old ribbon,
is this always the case though?

Have you tried known-good flat cables to make sure that it's not a different component causing the problems?

Got the right speed/type of cables for the HDD/DVD?

I've used a pair of generic blue ones for a year in my PIII system and haven't had any problems. Generic silvery ones in my current system and no problems yet, either.

I've been using the cable that comes with my gigabyte mobo,
and no problem warcrafting there...
I guess it's the cable, I can actually touch the bunch of cable at the end because the cable is not moulded or anything
