... has encountered a problem and needs to close." Anyone have a clue about this one? My laptop battery ran out unexpectedly a few weeks ago and Windows XP Home SP1 has been hosed with this error message (on start up) periodically ever since. All my network connections are missing and I need to do a hard reboot when I get this ditty. There's nothing in the microsoft knowledge base, nor was help forthcoming from the MS Community Forums.

Have you run a VIRUS Check lately?
Could be without the network connection the virus/trojan is hanging,
giving the error.
